1 Computer Algebra Based Assessment of Mathematics Online Laura Naismith Centre for Educational Technology and Distance Learning (CETADL) Chris Sangwin LTSN Math, Stats & OR Network

2 Introduction CABLE: Computer Algebra Based Learning and Evaluation A web-based, open source infrastructure for authoring, testing, storing, presenting and marking lightweight and flexible mathematical learning objects.

3 System Features Modular design approach to separate out CAS functions Learning objects consisting of CAS instantiation instructions, question stem, marking procedure and solution template Flexible options and answer tests that allow the same object to be used in different contexts Relational database to store learning objects, students’ attempts against particular learning object instances

4 Demonstration Implementation details: PHP 4.3 Logicampus VLE Axiom CAS www.cable.bham.ac.uk

5 Future Work Develop full working prototype Investigate use of interoperability standards Investigate assessment of individual steps (Beevers et al, 1995) to facilitate awarding of partial credit
