3 Sample Scenario: An entrepreneur is interested in opening a day care center in NM. She is trying to find out what information is available (and how to get to it) that can help her understand this industry, develop a business plan, and identify a good place to locate her business. What can we provide her? 3

4 A Census Bureau Econ Data Primer Establishments vs. Companies –Most data collected at the establishment basis Employer Businesses vs. Nonemployers –Most programs just cover employers Privacy –U.S. Code Title 13 results in suppression of data Business Classification –NAICS Economic Geographies –National, state, county, place, and ZIP Code Surveys vs. the Economic Census –More current = less detailed 4

The Industry Statistics Portal identifies the programs at the Census Bureau that provide data on a user selected industry that this entrepreneur might be able to use. 5 To access the ISP from www.census.gov: Click Business or Place your cursor on Business and select Data by Industry

9 Narrow My Search… Using data from Census Bureau programs like County Business Patterns can help our entrepreneur identify potential counties in New Mexico that she might consider opening her new day care center in. 9

Using the data from the Product Lines file for this industry (available from the Economic Census) can help an entrepreneur: understand the products and services typically provided by other businesses like hers, and Predict the potential sales of these products she might expect The other types of data available from the Economic Census can help her understand other aspects of her industry 12

13 13 No surprise that social assistance services make up 64% of day care center receipts/revenue in NM… …but government contributions, gifts, and grants is the second largest source of revenue at 17% Of the total social assistance services revenue, day care services account for 56%, while programs make up 6% and other services make up the remaining 2%
