Overview of the 4 Part Assignment Part One: Bring in 3 topics on notecards Part Two: In groups, students choose a preliminary topic and share with class. As a class decide on five topics to be researched. Part Three: Preliminary research on topics using databases. Revise topics as necessary. Part Four: Correctly document one source from each database. To be handed in.
8
Part One: Bring in 3 topics on notecards As you progressed through your second reading of Bordo’s “Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body,” you were asked to think about topics you would like to write about. You read the selections from NCH and Writing Analytically on selecting and narrowing an appropriate argumentative, researched topic. Keeping these readings in mind, write three potential topics for your Bordo paper on three separate notecards (one topic per card). Assessment: The students will have written 3 topics on 3 separate notecards. The quality of the topics is not relevant at this point. I want them to learn on their own through group and class discussion whether or not a topic is going to “work.” I will not collect the notecards.
9
Questions so far? Research shows that students only listen to about 25% of what they hear. By reading these slides and listening to my explanations, you should be comprehending more because of what we call “dual coding.” So, what do you have to do for homework Weds? –Bring in 3 topics on 3 notecards What “look” is Kate Moss portraying according to Bordo?
10
Part Two: Choose a preliminary topic and share with group then class In class: –Students will form 4 groups of 5 –Students will read what they consider to be their best topic aloud to the group members. –Each group will choose two topics to present to the class. –Groups will need to explain to the class how their topics meet the following criteria: narrow enough to fit 3-5 paper requirement, related to the reading, Interesting to audience *potential* researchability. –The topics will be listed on the board. Out of the 10 topics, the class will choose the best 5 topics. (These numbers are flexible depending on the quality of the topic choices.)
11
Assessment of Part Two I will sit with each group and listen to their discussion of the topics. I hope they will figure out as a group and then as a class which topics have more promise than others. I will refrain from evaluating their choices. Through the next several steps, they should discover on their own (constructivist approach) whether or not enough information is available on their topic. When the five topics are listed on the board, I will again refrain from judgment.
12
Questions? How many groups do you need to get into? –4–4 What will you do once you get into your groups? –Discuss your best topic. –Choose 2 of the best topics. What will we do as a class? –Pick 5 topics. Bordo’s essay is called “Male Beauty (Re)discovered” What connections can we make with RED’s advertisement slogan? This ad features child star, Dakota Fanning.
13
Part Three: Preliminary research on topics using databases For homework Each of the five group members will choose ONE of the 5 topics chosen by the class and do the following: –Develop a search statement appropriate to use in a library database (for help, see Go for the Gold Module 3.) –Print out the results for each search you run. You will use the same search statement in each of the following library databases: Academic Search Premier OR InfoTrac One File Sociological Abstracts OR Communication and Mass Media Lexis Nexis Academic Leo, the library catalog Remember, for each search you run, print out a copy of your search results (not the articles themselves, but a copy of the search.) Make it clear which database you used.
14
Part Three: Preliminary research on topics using databases. Group work. Bring printouts of your searches to class. (These questions will be a handout). –Discuss your search experience with members of your group who also researched the same topic. –Which search statement seemed to work the best? –Which was less effective? –What did you learn from this exercise about.. Search statements Databases Successes Frustrations –Present your findings to the class.
15
Part Three: Preliminary research on topics using databases. Share with Class The groups will discuss the questions presented in the handout to the class. As a class, common and dissimilar experiences will be discussed and listed on the board. As a class, the students will determine what makes a good preliminary topic and how they know whether there will be enough information to get started on the paper. As a class, the five original topics will be revisited and revised. These revised topics will become the paper topics for the Bordo writing assignment.
16
Part Three: Preliminary research on topics using databases. Highlight Sources to Hand in From your list of sources, highlight the two you felt were the best and hand them in with the printout of your source search. –Explain why you think these are your best sources. Assessment –The student will have picked an article other than the first listed, unless it is clearly appropriate. –The student will recognize scholarly articles found in peer reviewed journals. –The student will identify articles with are appropriate for their level of knowledge and subject sophistication. –How to assess with a rubric??? How do I know what is appropriate for their reading and subject sophistication?
17
Questions? Each group member has to research how many topics? –1–1 What do you need to do after each search? –Print it out Once you’ve completed your searches, what do you need to highlight? –2 best sources What do you need to bring to class? –Printouts of sources What is the final product of the class discussion of topics after they’ve been researched in the databases? –Revised topics How does Mark Wahlberg’s pose stray from Bordo’s thesis?
18

The documentation will be assessed for accuracy of format and information provided. 100% accuracy is expected.
19
Why???? Why does Kate Moss always look stoned? Is this how women are expected to look and act? As a handout to be answered individually then discussed as a class. –Why do you think I create this series of assignments? –What do you know now about selecting a topic that you did not know before? I hope this knowledge assists you in your Bordo paper. Quality of the selected topics and class discussion of this handout will be my assessment.
