Functions of the Emergency Medical Dispatcher n takes in-coming calls n alerts and directs appropriate response n keeps track of ongoing communications n gives pre-arrival instructions

The Role of the EMD in an Emergency n an important part of the emergency medical team n the first contact a caller has n initiates emergency system n chose and administer correct pre-arrival instructions

Pre-arrival Instructions n provides immediate assistance while help is on the way n provides updated information to responding personnel n may be life saving in critical incidents n provides emotional support for the caller and victim

Time of Response n goal is to have a ten minute scene time n Tx more likely to be successful within the “golden hour” n EMD receives call and dispatches unit n unit arrives on scene, treats, and transports

Why 9-1-1? n Meets public requirements –brief, easily remembered –dialed quickly n unique number –never been used as an area code, office code, or service code
