2 Salsa Micro Session At the end of the lesson you will –Be able to dance a basic step –Be able to dance a mambo step –Be able to dance an open step –Have a routine to perform!

3 Salsa “salsa” – Spanish word for sauce Salsa dance originates from Cuban son –Influences from Mambo, Meringue, Rumba Lots of different styles –We’re going to dance LA-style

4 Salsa Beat Four Beats per bar Only three steps per bar –Count 1-2-3- - 5-6-7- -1-2-3- -5-6-7- - –Sometimes a flick or tap or kick on fourth beat Weight change every step

5 Salsa Dancing Salsa is a partner dance! –Leader (usually men) steps –Follower (usually ladies) steps Find a partner –Gender doesn’t matter! Leader leads with left foot Follower leads with right foot

6 Basic Step Side to side movement Step on lead foot[1] Step on trailing foot[2] Step on lead foot[3] Tap/Kick/Rest[4] Repeat in opposite direction starting on trailing foot

7 Mambo Step Back and forth movement ROCK onto lead foot[1-2] –Men: forward, Women: backward Close feet [3] Tap/Kick/Rest[4] ROCK onto second foot[1-2] –Men: backward, Women: forward Close feet [3] Tap/Kick/Rest[4]

8 Open Step Stepping away from partner ROCK BACK on lead foot[1-2] Close feet[3] Tap/Kick/Rest[4] ROCK BACK on second foot [1-2] Close feet[3] Tap/Kick/Rest[4]

9 Salsa Hold

10 Routine 4 basics (16 beats) 4 mambos (16 beats) 4 opens (16 beats) …. and start again! Remember: it’s 1-2-3-tap 1-2-3-tap
