The beauty of split powers
Federalism The beauty of split powers
2
What Exactly is Federalism?
Federalism definition: a system in which power is divided between local, state, and federal governments. Why should power be split? Discuss it!
3
Breaking it Down In the United States there are three types of government: Federal State Local
4
Federal This is the form of government that helps run the entire nation. There are three branches of this government (we will discuss this later) Legislative Executive Judicial Think of it this way: You are one person but you have different duties as a brother/sister, son/daughter or uncle/aunt.
5
State This is the form of government that helps run each individual state. 50 states = 50 state governments There are three branches in this government as well: Legislative Executive Judicial
6
Local This is the form of government that helps runs cities, towns or counties inside each state. This is run by what’s called a municipal government. Power is given to these municipal governments from the State. The municipal government helps run services such as: Police Fire Department Parks City transportation
7
How Does it Work? All three types of government work together to best serve the interests of the United States and their citizens. It is necessary to have all three types of government because without it our nation would surely crumble.
8
Leaders Federal Government – President State Government – Governor
Local Government – Mayor Even though these leaders do not have absolute control they are the ones who are in charge of the different types of government.

Government Pyramid State Local Federal
10
Government Pyramid What sticks out to you about the pyramid?
Who is on top? Who is on the bottom?
11
Government Pyramid The Federal Government is on top of the pyramid and does have a bit more power over the state and local governments. However, if it wasn’t for the state and local government (the foundation of the pyramid) the federal government would not be strong. Think of it this way: Think of your favorite famous person: celebrity, athlete, musician, etc. They would not be famous if it were not for you, the fans.
