1 Lesson 6-4 Example 5 6-4 Solve. CARS Frankie was counting the cars in the parking lot across from the park. When he got to the park, there were 32 cars. Three left the lot, then five more left the lot. As he was leaving, two cars pulled into the lot followed by 3 more. How many cars were at the lot when Frankie left? Understand Read the problem. Write what you know. The parking lot started with 32 cars. Three left, then five left, then two arrived, followed by another 3 cars.

2 Lesson 6-4 Example 5 6-4 Plan Pick a strategy. One strategy to use is to use logical reasoning. When a car leaves the parking lot, you would subtract it from the total. When a car pulls into the parking lot, you would add it to the total.

3 Lesson 6-4 Example 5 6-4 Solve Write an expression to represent the activity at the parking lot. 32 – 3 – 5 + 2 + 3 Simplify. 32 – 3 – 5 + 2 + 3 = 29

4 Lesson 6-4 Example 5 6-4 Check You can use a number line or counters to check your answer.
