Family: Moraceae (Mulberry family). Latin name: Ficus carica L. Common names: Common fig & edible fig

Cultivation F. carica has been cultivated for a long time in various places worldwide for its edible fruit. Remnants of figs have been found in excavations of sites dating as far back as at least 5,000 B.C. F. carica is presumed to originate from Western Asia and spread to the Mediterranean by humans Major producers of edible figs include Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Spain, Greece, California, Italy, Brazil and other places with typically mild winters and hot dry summers. Fruits can be eaten raw, dried, canned, or in other preserved forms.

Medical properties Its fruit, root and leaves are used in the medicine in different disorders such as gastrointestinal (colic, indigestion, loss of appetite and diarrhea), respiratory (sore throats, coughs and bronchial problems), inflammatory and cardiovascular disorders.

The fruit is antipyretic, tonic, purgative useful in inflammation. weakness, paralysis, pain in chest, cures piles, stimulate growth of hair.
