VALUE Drawing with Shade
2
Value… Is how we get the ILLUSION of three dimensions in a drawing…
Creates depth on a flat object
3
For value, we need a light source…
4
CHIAROSCURO (= value) Highlight Mid-tones Shadow Reflected light
Cast shadow
5
TENEBRISM This is where you use HIGH CONTRAST to get a dramatic effect. There are mostly DARK and LIGHT areas with this type of shading…..
6
Things to remember.. 1 – we don’t use LINES in value drawing.
Let value be your edge….a dark value up next to a light value produces an EDGE without having to draw a LINE
7
2 – When you add value to an object, really. LOOK at what you see
2 – When you add value to an object, really LOOK at what you see. Make sure there is a GRADUAL change from one value to the next, unless it really looks that way!

Pencils The graphite pencils in here are different weights of lead –
2H – hard lead, lighter mark HB - a little softer lead, a bit darker mark 4B, 5B, 6B – much softer lead, dark mark 4H – 2H – HB – 2B – 4B – 6B – 8B

# Value Scale You are going to create a value scale using nicely filled in value – each box will have an edge to it and be distinct from the next Each will consist of 9 one-inch blocks in a row The 1st block will be WHITE and the last will be BLACK
10
Example Notice there are gradual steps to get from white to black….if you blur your eyes, they are fade together nicely

#2 – Shaded Sphere On your paper, you are going to draw a sphere with a diameter of 6 inches, and SHADE it. Create an imaginary light source! It should have: Highlight Mid –tones Shadow Reflected light Cast shadow
12
Arrange your paper like this:
Value scale is 9 inches long, one inch for each box 1 value scale –nicely blended with a distinction between each box Sphere – shaded. Show me the highlight, mid-tones, dark tones, reflected light, and casted shadow White/grey still life– shaded. Show me the highlight, mid-tones, dark tones, reflected light, and casted shadow Name
