4. Family Child Care The most common type of child care in the US.
Child care is provided in a private home.
In most states, these homes are required to be licensed, but it’s difficult in enforce.

5. Child Care Centers
Facilities that offer full day children’s programs are often called child care centers.
The care is designed to meet the child’s basic nutrition, health, and safety needs.
The curriculum emphasizes on the whole child which includes social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs.

6. Montessori Schools
This approach is the belief that children “learn how to Learn” or children teach themselves with little help from the teacher.
Independence is stressed in Montessori schools.

7. Headstart
A federal government program to help children in poverty get a good start on education.
This is one of the most successful programs in the country.

9. Kindergarten 3 basic scheduling patterns in Kdg:
Half-day- the programs runs from 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours per day.
Full-day- run from 6-8 hours a day.
Full-day/alternating: where students attend every other day or attend two days one week and 3 days the next week.
Goals: to have respect for the contributions, property and rights of other children.
Have positive feelings about school

10. School-Age Child Care
This provides care for children before and/or after school. Kids mostly do their homework, play games, and take part in other activities.

11. Parent Cooperatives
These are formed and run by parents who wish to take part in their children’s preschool experience.
Advantages:
Teacher can devote more time to the children and the curriculum.
Teachers can build better and stronger relationships with parents.

12. Parent Cooperatives Disadvantages
Lack of control on the teacher’s part; parents are responsible for making rules and can be differences of opinion between teacher and parent.

14. Laboratory Schools
Also known as campus schools- these are located on college campuses.
They provide excellent programs for children.
Primary focus is the train future teachers and to serve as a study group for research.

15. High School Child Care Programs
Similar to Laboratory Schools, they provide training to high school students are interested child care occupations.

16. Sponsorship in Early Childhood
Public Sponsorship: This type of sponsorship is funded by federal, state, or local governments. Funds may also come through school districts. Ex: Head Start Programs
Private Sponsorship: This type of sponsorship rely heavily on parent fees to cover most of the operating expenses. Ex: Most daycare centers

17. Employer Sponsorship
This type of sponsorship provides employees with some type of childcare assistance.

Write a one page summary about your experiences in Preschool or Kindergarten. What was your routine? How were your teachers? What do you remember learning the most in Preschool or Kindergarten? Turn in when you’re finished.

20. Selecting A Child Care Program
Decisions about a child care program is based on needs, priorities, and goals.
Some questions to ask about quality child care include:
Is it accredited?
Do the children look happy?
Is the curriculum aligned with meeting the child’s need?

21. Center Accreditation
Accreditation: certifies that a set of standards has been met by a child care center or school.
