Your Future What does the future hold for you?
2
Global Warming? OR Man-Made Disaster?
3
What difference can it make? Did I hear you say: It doesn’t matter to me or you? Well, who will it matter too? Will the future of the world make more of a difference to you or to me?
4
What tools can we use to help us become more aware? Observation Documentation Experimentation Analysis of data …???
5
Scientific Tools Microscope Submarines Satellites Computers Software Programs ??????
6
ImageJ: Image Processing & Analysis Program A free Software tool used by scientists, mathematicians, teachers, students, and whomever desires to learn to use it, that is distributed by our government.
7
ImageJ Free tool can be downloaded at: http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/index.html Measurement of images From microscopic images to large land forms Time lapse animation of images Images taken over a time period

ARAL SEA TRAGEDY
9
4th Biggest INLAND Lake
10
Now mostly a desert!

The Remnants of the Aral Sea in 1973 to 2000 Animated Stack
15
What did the scientists find out? The Soviet Union was diverting the Syr Darya & the Amu Darya Rivers from feeding water to the Aral Sea. The water was used for irrigating cotton crops and rice fields AND, poorly built irrigation canals along with water evaporation caused 90% of the water loss.
16
What happened to the area? The sea level continued to drop each year and over 40 years: 90 % = desert Lakes salt content was 33 g/litre and it increased to 98 g/litre 73 species of birds either died or left the area 70 species of mammals either died or left the area 24 species of fish died
17
What happened to the area? ALL the lakes fish & plant life died in that 90% of the Aral Sea Salt pans and contaminated runoff lakes have appeared Crops that can grow are being killed off by the heavy salt-laden particles falling on the good land Winters have become harsher & longer Summers have become hotter & shorter
18
What happened to the people? There had been 27 million inhabitants living in this area because there aren’t any jobs people have left the area fishing industry that employed 60,000 people ended all canning plants closed jobs have gone away
19
Health Issues Tuberculosis Cancers Other lung disease infant mortality is 30 times higher than it used to be. WHY? drinking water is heavily polluted with salt drinking water is heavily polluted with fertilizers used to grow the cotton drinking water is heavily polluted with pesticides The air quality is extremely poor!
