+ CLASSROOM DESIGN: KINDERGARTEN Steele’s Six Functions in Classroom View! Brittany Maiden 10/6/14

+ Security & Shelter Reading & Writing Center! – Kindergarteners are able to feel safe when there are soft spaces in the classroom! Restroom in Classroom- Kindergarteners feel safe when they have this room available to them when in need. Students must knock three times and ask if it is occupied before proceeding to open the door.

+ Social Contact Students’ desks are put into clusters to emphasize small-group work and cooperative learning. The teacher is also able to move efficiently around the tables and through the aisles. The Carpet Mat encourages student interaction and serves as a place where students can work in small groups or as a large group during instruction time.

+ Symbolic Interaction Classroom Rules- The teacher and students establish these rules together. They show the students’ responsibility & the teacher’s expectations. The Flip Chart shows us the work on the teacher but also the student. One by one, the students come up to the flip chart and underline the appropriate alphabetic letter! This is a great example of student interaction and activity!

+ Task Instrumentality The labeled baskets used for the four student tables and the ABC wall serves as pieces to the environment that help the students carry out the tasks they need to accomplish!

+ Pleasure The number wall and calendar chart are displayed immediately to the left when you enter the classroom. It is eye- catching and colorful! The organized bins reduces clutter and displays the teacher’s organization skills!

+ Growth The “How is Your Day?” Chart tracks the students’ cooperation and behavior progress throughout the day! The activity centers serve as a place where students to make shapes, count blocks, put together puzzles, etc. This allows for students to grow in their learning! The computer center gives students a different perspective on activities and educational games! They can track their progress throughout the year on any given activity!
