Alhamdulillah, nahmaduhu wa nasta’eenuhu was nastaghfir
Wa nauthu billahi min shururi anfusinaa wa min sayyiaati a’maalina
May yahdillahu fa laa mudhilla lah
Was may yudhlil fa laa haadiya lah
Wa nashhadu allah ilaha illallah wahdahu laa shareeka lah
wa nashhadu anna muhammadan abduhu wa rasulullah
All praise and thanks is due to Allah. We praise Allah, we seek assistance and forgiveness from Allah. And we seek refuge in Allah from our lower selves and from the wrongs we commit. Whoever Allah guides no one can misguide, and whoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. And we bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but God, the One who is unique and has no partners. And we bear witness that Muhammad is Allah’s servant and messenger.

يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإثْمُهُمَآ أَكْبَرُ مِن نَّفْعِهِمَا وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ كَذَلِكَ يُبيِّنُ اللّهُ لَكُمُ الآيَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَفَكَّرُونَ 2:219 They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: "In them is immense crime, and benefit for humankind; but the crime is greater than the benefit."
And they ask you how much they should spend; Say: “The excess." This way Allah makes clear to you His signs so that you may reflect.

3. You decide! Allah is well aware of your innermost intentions.

So let’s reflect.
In both cases, intoxication and spending of ones wealth for good causes are being questions. Yet, it is obvious that both intoxication and hording of wealth has its negatives and so when people asked the prophet these questions they did not ask for clarity, they asked to confuse the matter.
Hence, Allah said to the prophet: If they ask you these obvious questions, tell them: AL-AFWA - Give up whatever you perceive as EXCESS.
You decide! Allah is well aware of your innermost intentions.

Today we want to focus on the EXCESSIVENESS and abuse of intoxication.
At this stage we going to be bold enough and say that in this verse Allah says that intoxication is ok, it’s the excessiveness in it that is harmful.
The prophet pbuh said:
Kullu muskirin Khamr, wa kullu muskirin Haraam
Every intoxication is like wine and everything that intoxicates is unwholesome (unnatural / against the fitrah – natural state of being).

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالأَنصَابُ وَالأَزْلاَمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
5:90 O you who have attained to faith! Intoxicants and gambling, imagery, and the head and featherless arrows (used in divination), are grime of Satan’s endeavors: avoid it, so that you may prosper.

In the first verse, Allah is stating that the harm intoxicants cause it far greater than its benefits. So in this verse Allah is expounding on harm that it causes. Allah adds intoxicants, gambling and fortune-telling to the many social evils and stating that it is some of the filthiest things that Shaytaan could come up with.
Then Allah says: If you want to prosper, in every sphere of your existence, in this world or in the next, AVOID it. (put it to your side)(do not make it part of your forward journey)

So what happens when we make it part of our forward journey:
Statistics 2007 ( shows that:
Six out of ten drivers that dies in accidents have dangerously high alcohol levels in their blood.
50% of truck drivers and 30% of taxi drivers had been drinking or smoking marijuana.
3000 Adult pedestrians are killed in motor accidents per year. 70% of them are drunk when killed.
When you are on the road at night, one out of every seven drivers sharing the road with you, is drunk.
It is the third leading cause of death in the USA.

So what happens when we make it part of our forward journey:
Crime Sector
Just under half of all male prisoners had consumed alcohol or drugs at the time of, or before committing, their most recent crime. (NICRO)
Domestic Violence
67% of domestic violence in the Cape Metropolitan area was alcohol related (MRC). 
In a study of women abused by their spouses, 69% identified alcohol/drug abuse as the main cause of conflict leading to the abuse(MRC).
76% of domestic violence in rural areas in the South-Western Cape was found to be alcohol related (MRC).

One study found that the incidence of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) in Cape Town is 1 per 281 live births. 
Alcohol abuse costs South Africa at least R9 billion a year (MRC).
One study in the Orange Free State found that 20% of gold mine workers involved in occupational injuries had high concentrations of alcohol in their blood streams (MRC).
It is estimated that alcohol related costs associated with pedestrian trauma alone are in excess of $83 million per year (MRC).
It is estimated that motor vehicle collisions cost the country at least $1,5 billion per year and that at least 50% of these vehicle accidents are alcohol related (Transport Ministry).

South Africa has "one of the highest per capita alcohol consumption rates in the world". (The National Injury Surveillance System in its "Profile of Fatal and Non-fatal Injuries in South Africa" of May 2000).
1 in every 13 adults – abuse alcohol or are alcoholic, according to the NIAAA
Can we safely say that as a nation we are responsible about intoxications, that we can determine what is EXCESS?

We do not have to look far to notice how intoxication and gambling has ripped our society apart. In most cases, and specifically in the South African context, men and the perpetrators and women and children are the survivors of men’s alcohol abuse.

    إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَن يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاء فِي الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ وَيَصُدَّكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ اللّهِ وَعَنِ الصَّلاَةِ فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّنتَهُونَ
5:91 Satan's wants that there should occur enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and that you should turn away from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer. So will you not put an end to it?

Wa nafa’nee wa iyyakum bil aayaati wa dhikril hakeem
Innahu jawaadun malikun barrun rabbur ra’oofur raheem
May Allah bless me and you through the guidance of this noble Quran
And may it teachings and remembrances benefit me and you
Truly Allah is the possessor of wealth, the sovereign, the all good, the one who has authority over us, the all-loving and all-merciful.

وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا فِي هَذَا الْقُرْآنِ لِلنَّاسِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلٍ وَكَانَ الْإِنسَانُ أَكْثَرَ شَيْءٍ جَدَلًا
18:54 We have explained in detail in this Qur'an, for the benefit of mankind, every kind of similitude: but man is, in most things, argumentative.
Allah says that even after we’ve given men examples / similitudes / guidance, human beings will still argue the point.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ اصْبِرُواْ وَصَابِرُواْ وَرَابِطُواْ وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ (3:200) 3:200 O you who have attained to faith! Be patient, outdo one another in patience, and be committed, and remain conscious of Allah, so that you
may attain to a happy
state!
A happy state is not an intoxicated state of momentarily relief of life’s hardships, but a happy state is a state in which the believer is contented with his lot and remembers Allah through it.
As Allah says in the Quran
Fa-inna dhikru tanfa’ul mu’mineen
Verily there is benefit for the believers in remembering Allah often.

Allahummansur man nasra deena Muhammad; Allahummansuril mujahideena fee qulli makaan; Allahumma Yassir wa laa tu’assir
Allahumma tammim bil ghayr wa antal kareemu muyassir
O Allah, assist those who assist the cause of Muhammad
O Allah, assist all those who strive towards good in every place
O Allah, make things easy for us and remove difficulty
O Allah, complete us in Goodness, Truly You are the most noble of all those who provides assistance.
Innallaha wa malaa’ikatahu yusolloona alan nabi… yaa ayyuhallatheena aamanu sollu alayhi wa sallimoo tasleema.
Wa aakhiri da’waanaa anil hamdu lillahi rabbil aalameen
Truly Allah and the Angels sends blessings and salutations on the Prophet Muhammad, O you who believe, send greetings and salutations upon him.
And the final word is that all praise and thanks is due to Allah, the Authority over all creation.
اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاء وَالْمُنكَرِ وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ 29:45 Recite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee, and establish regular Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do. Let us stand for prayer!
