What are developmental levels? The terms Emergent through Fluent define broad developmental reading levels that students evolve through in their literacy development.

Emergent Level Reading Behaviors Demonstrate Print Concepts: Understand the purpose of print in reading and writing Use left to right directionality of print in reading and writing Understands the concept of a letter, word and sentence Use space between words when writing Match one spoken word to one written word while reading and pointing (1:1) Recognize all upper and lowercase letters

Emergent Level Reading Behaviors Phonemic Awareness Segment sentences into words Blending phonemes in words Segment words into phonemes Manipulate phonemes Recognize beginning and/or ending sounds in words Hear and say syllables Hear, say, and generate rhyming words

Emergent Level Reading Behaviors Demonstrate Phonics and Word Recognition: Recognize and use all common consonant sounds Distinguish between consonant and vowels Recognize that a single vowel stands for a short or long vowel sound Recognize and use simple phonograms (word families) Recognize and use CVC patterns Demonstrate word solving actions Identify and use 20-25 high frequency words Use known words to make connections and solve words Use letter-sound information to decode words

Emergent Level Reading Behaviors Demonstrate an Awareness of Fluency Demonstrate Comprehension when listening and reading by participating in a group Use self-monitoring strategies to clarify meaning Searching for and using information Summarize Predicting Making Connections Synthesizing Inferring Analyzing Critiquing Respond to text in writing in a variety of ways

Emergent Level Vocabulary Demonstrate vocabulary growth by increasing level of word and concept-based knowledge (e.g., important words, useful words, challenging words)

Early 1 through Fluent Levels These reading levels describe students who are actively learning to read by building on the skills learned in the Emergent Level.

Look at how the skills build from Emergent to Early 1 and Early 2 Demonstrate Phonics Recognize all common consonant sounds (EM) Identify and use all short vowel sounds (E1) Recognize and use some simple letter combinations that represent long vowel sounds(E2) Demonstrate Word Solving Actions Identify and use 20 -25 high frequency words (EM) Identify and use 50 high frequency words (E1) Identify and use 100 high-frequency words (E2)

Reading Goals for Kindergarten The goal of reading instruction during the kindergarten year is for each student to master all the objectives at the Emergent level (at a minimum). Students are not longer described as on/above/below grade level at the end of kindergarten.

Homework Reading books will begin coming home at least once a week. Books may be repeated. Memorizing text is not a bad thing! It is the perfect opportunity to ask your child to find specific words. Please return the books the following day for a successful reading group!

Homework Handwriting will come home once a week in your child’s reading folder Poetry Journal will come home once a week

Rotations If a group is crowded, please come back – the same information will be shared all three times Think of your child’s strengths – go to sessions that would best benefit your student Teachers will be in the halls to help direct traffic Stop by the library’s booth in the hallway Drop feedback forms on the front table on your way out! We are on a very tight schedule – please email questions!
