Long Vowel Sounds Many Japanese words have long vowel sounds, where two vowels follow each other, or a vowel follows a syllable. When this happens, the sound is lengthened and the two characters are pronounced as one long sound rather than as two separate characters. A change from a short to a long vowel sound also changes the meaning, so it is very important to spell words correctly and say them clearly.
76
How to make long vowels: Long aa sound: add あ (a) to a character ending in an “a” sound e.g. おかあさん (mother) Long ii sound: add い (i) to a character ending in an “i” sound e.g. おおきい (big) Long uu sound: add う (u) to a character ending in an “u” sound e.g. くうき (air) You will need to learn the spellings of words with long ee and oo sounds carefully, as there are TWO ways they can be written. However “ei” and “ou” are used most of the time and only a small number of words use “ee” and “oo”. Note that regardless of the spelling, both versions are pronounced the same way Long ee sound: add い (i) or え (e) to a character ending in an “e” sound. e.g. すいえい (swimming) OR ええ (yes) Long oo sound: add う (u) or お (o) to a character ending in an “o” sound. e.g. こうこう (high school) OR おおきい (big)

Long Vowels and Romaji When writing Japanese words using romaji, long vowels can be represented in two different ways Method 1: Words are written by substituting all hiragana sounds for English letters, e.g. sayounara, ohayou, kyouto Method 2: A line above the first vowel is used to represent a long vowel sound, e.g. sayōnara, ohayō, kyōto Both methods are accepted as correct, however you will need to be careful with the second, as it can trick you into spelling words incorrectly when you change them back to hiragana.
