Shared governance generally UO Constitution – Ratified in 2011 – Affirmed by President Gottfredson Structures – “Statutory faculty” Meets as Faculty Assembly when called by petition or by impasse with President – Delegation to UO Senate of everyday governance Representative arrangement includes all categories of faculty, OAs, classified staff, officers of research, students Creates and manages over 40 committees 10-year review in process

University of Oregon Shared Governance UO Board of Trustees Independent governing board created by the Oregon Legislature; will become empowered in 2014 UO President & UO Statutory Faculty Body of professors consisting of the University President, tenure-related officers of instruction, career non-tenure-track officers of instruction (including librarians), and OAs who are tenured in an academic department. UO Faculty Assembly Meeting of the Statutory Faculty UO Senate Faculty, OAs, officers of research, classified staff, students. External BoardsStanding Committees Administrative Advisory Groups Required by OARs. Faculty Grievance Appeal Committee and the Promotion and Tenure Retention Appeal Committee. These groups report to an administrator but partner with the UO Senate to define their charge and membership.

UO Senate Comprised of all constituents – Officers of Administration – 3 seats – Statutory faculty Tenure-related faculty and non-librarian career NTTF – 37 seats Librarians – 2 seats – Career NTTF Officers of Research – 1 seat – Classified staff – 3 seats – Students – 5 seats Two-year terms for all but student senators

Shared governance in the new environment Faculty union – Conditions of employment contained in CBA – Shared governance role maintained for Senate UO Board of Trustees – Faculty, non-faculty staff, and students have membership [as does President, as non-voting ex officio] Governor decides whether faculty and non-faculty staff member will having voting rights UO Senate consulted about faculty appointee Non-faculty staff appointee: Kurt Willcox [classified] – Relationship with shared governance structures are unknown – this year details will be worked out

Service opportunities for OAs Senate [3 seats] Standing committees and administrative advisory groups – Example of Environmental Issues Committee: 3 - 5 faculty; 3 students; 2 Officers of Administration; and 2 Classified Staff members. Also ex officios: Director of the Office of Sustainability, Associate Director of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, Associate Vice President for Campus Planning and Real Estate, and ASUO Student Sustainability Coordinator. Ad hoc committees – Example of Respectful Workplace Committee and creation of Ombuds position Communication needed – To supervisors, about importance of OA participation in shared governance – To OAs, about available opportunities
