1  Beowulf’s King, Higlac, sent Beowulf to help Hrothgar.  Beowulf is able to defeat Grendel without weapons.  Beowulf makes Herot Hall safe again.  When he fights the dragon, Beowulf needs help from his loyal follower Wiglaf.

2  Poets during Anglo times were called “scops.”  Anglo-Saxon life was very difficult. It was stern and barbaric  Beowulf displayed “commitatus” or undying loyalty to King Higlac.  Generally, epic poems do not rhyme.  A kenning combines two words to create a metaphor. Ex. sky-candle for sun.  The burial ship The Sutton-Hoo contained important artifacts from the time period.

3  Beowulf boasted that he would fight Grendel without weapons.  Beowulf also killed Grendel’s mom by cutting off her head with a special sword.  His sword did not work because of a spell on Grendel’s mom’s flesh.
