Write about a time when you, someone you know, or a person in history was greedy. What happened? Did any good come out of it? Share your thoughts with a partner before you write. Write at least 5 sentences. Include a semicolon in 1 of your sentences.

7 Kennings  Look through likes 666-678. Write the kennings that you find on your white boards. Note: I found 3!

8 Comprehension Question  Why does Beowulf say that he will wear armor into battle? Do you think that there is only one reason?

9 Comprehension Question  Why do you think that Beowulf wants to go into battle alone?  What has he done in the past?

10 CONNECTING TEXTS: Page 904 In the poem “Ulysses,” another archetypal epic hero is explored (Odysseus). Odysseus was a king of Ithaca. He fought in the Trojan war and created the Trojan horse that the Greeks used to take over the city of Troy. It took him 10 years to get back home. He saved his men from Cyclops and a host of other misfortunes. Read over Ulysses and fill out the worksheet. What do they have in common?

11 Fate  For the Anglo-Saxons wyrd meant fate. A hero could postpone his death through bravery but fate would win out eventually.  How does fate play a part in this battle?  Where else was fate referred to in the poem?

14 Comitatus  According to Anglo-Saxon code, warriors must defend their lords to the death. Leaders also rewarded followers in gold and riches and expected loyalty in return.  What does this say about Beowulf’s warriors?  Where else have we seen hints of the “Comitatus” code?

15 Act it Out!  I need a volunteer to be Wiglaf and read lines 763-790  How does Wiglaf use logic to convince the warriors to stay!

19 Similar & Differences Between Grendel/Dragon Battle?  With a partner, talk about the similarities and differences of the battle with Grendel and the Battle with the Dragon.

20 Favorites  Draw your favorite scene in the poem so far on the story board. In at least 1 sentence, explain why the scene is significant.

21 Closing: Vocabulary  Turn to page 53.  Many of our words came from the Anglo Saxons.  List examples of prefixes and suffixes not listed along with definition (3).  Create one word with a word you already know combining with one of the Anglo-Saxon pre-fixes and suffixes.
