3 The First English Settlements Sec 1: The First English Settlements England Seeks Colonies: Main Idea: During the age of exploration, England joined the other European powers in seeking colonies in the Americas. Founding Jamestown Main Idea: The first permanent English colony in Jamestown struggled in its first years. Jamestown Prospers Main Idea: The Virginia colonists set up a form of representative government and introduced slavery. 5 The New England Colonies Sec 2: The New England Colonies Geography of New England Main Idea: Farming is difficult in New England, but the region has resources like forests and rich fishing grounds. Puritans in Massachusetts Bay Main Idea: Like the Pilgrims before them, the Puritans founded a colony in New England in order to practice their religion freely. New Colonies Main Idea: Religious disputes led some people to spread out and start new colonies in New England. Growth and Change Main Idea: As the number of colonists in New England grew, the region went through many changes. 6 The Salem Witch Trials TRANSPARENCY Transparency: The Salem Witch Trials 1. Painting depicts injustices of the Salem witch trials: the judge and jury were all male, but the accused are mostly women. 2. Comparison of Trials: Both then and now, an accused person is charged with a crime before being tried, and we hold trials with a judge and jury. In modern American trials the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and have the right to legal counsel and a fair trial.

8 Geography of the Middle Colonies Main Idea: With a warmer climate and more fertile soil than New England, the Middle Colonies became a farming region. New York and New Jersey Main Idea: Before the English took over, New York and New Jersey were ruled by the Dutch as a single colony. Pennsylvania and Delaware Main Idea: Pennsylvania and Delaware were founded by Quakers, who believed in religious toleration. Growth and Change Main Idea: People from many European countries settled in the Middle Colonies during the 1600s and early 1700s. 11 The Southern Colonies Sec 4: The Southern Colonies Geography of the Southern Colonies Main Idea: With a warm climate suited to crops requiring many workers, the Southern Colonies came to depend on slavery. Virginia Grows Main Idea: The Virginia colonists fought Native Americans while sometimes quarreling among themselves. Religious Toleration in Maryland Main Idea: Religious toleration among Christians was a key feature of the Maryland Colony. Colonies in the Carolinas and Georgia Main Idea: Large plantations took hold in South Carolina, whereas North Carolina and Georgia tended to have small farms.
