Highway Transportation System and the S.I.P.D.E. Process
3
Highway Transportation System Parts of the HTS Motor Vehicles (cars, vans, buses, motorcycles, trucks, construction/farm equipment) Streets Highways Drivers Cyclists Pedestrians
4
More than 243 million registered vehicles travel within the HTS. –Large to small vehicles –Differ not only in size and appearance; how they handle. Heavy truck vs. sports car Failures: pose serious danger –Reckless driving –J-walking –Weaving bikes through traffic
5
Skills Physical Skill- The person’s coordination with the vehicle Social Skill- Interaction with others on the roads –Unfortunately, we are not very social people –Rude and inconsiderate –Road Rage Mental Skill- Driving is a mental skill. Breakdowns in the HTS result from poor decision making
6
What is the Purpose of the HTS? The main goal of the Highway Transportation System is to move people from place to place safely and efficiently.
7
HTS Regulation The HTS is regulated by: 1. Federal, State, Local Government Federal –Sets uniform standards for vehicle safety State and Local –Pass driving regulations for their state or city limits and enforce traffic laws passed by the federal government.
8
National Highway Safety Act What? –Traffic safety guidelines, each state sets own laws Established by… –The federal government Enforces –Vehicle Registration and Inspection –Driver licensing –Traffic laws and courts –Highway construction and maintenance Enforced by 1. Police 2. DMV 3. Courts
9
Engineers Plan the route of a highway, construction of bridges, exit and entrance ramps, traffic sign locations, and curves. Helps make our HTS the safest system in the world. Vehicle engineering helps to make vehicles the safest and easiest to operate as well as the cleanest.
10
DMV Regulates drivers license, truck weighs an operators, license plates, fees, registration, taxes, titles. Sole purpose- make system safer for all users
11
How can you reduce your risk? 1.Keep vehicle in top condition 1.Brakes, tires, windows, engine, ect. Better condition= more control 2.Anticipate the actions of others 1.Defensive driving- behavior cues 3.Take steps to protect yourself and others (how can you do this?) –Seat belts, –Low vs. high headlights
12
4.Drive only when in sound mental and physical condition -Emotions effect driving 5.Develop your driving skills - Practice makes perfect
13
Space Cushion Space Cushion: leaving a margin of space between you and the car in front of you. -Gives you room to maneuver your vehicle incase of sudden stops -Increases reaction time
14
S.I.P.D.E.
15
Using the S.I.P.D.E. Process S= SEARCH for possible hazards or risks I= IDENTIFY objects or conditions ahead that could interfere with your planned path of travel (look “12-15 seconds” ahead) P= PREDICT what the risk/hazard may do or how it will affect your path of driving D= DECIDE your safest plan of action E= EXECUTE your plan
16
How would you use the SIPDE process to navigate through this traffic scene?
