08/27/03 (1:1) housekeeping class –discussion leaders (facilitator, time keeper, task master) all readings assigned that day assign seats –new announcements each friday –short reading for Friday class on website –food ok (remove leftovers) –1-2 –rule 19 –lectures on website

notebooks –you do not have to have them in placement –each Monday turn in (in envelope provided) the notebook material from the previous week tab each section with a post-it and put in the order specified in placement syllabus 1 follow syllabus instructions on word-processing –material will be returned Friday at lab (class, segment 2) –put into notebooks immediately –notebooks will be checked at to-be-announced intervals across the semester fall “mini-break” –week of 10/13 (first week of segment 2)—no readings or assignments in 321, music, and art.

placement –follow building dress code (skin may be in, but not in placements) –concerns: no matter how small—talk to supervisor right away –absences: phone call to co-op and supervisor; email to supervisor and me asap –lates: apologize to co-op; email supervisor and me that day –by end of second week, take a walk around the school neighborhood. get a sense of where the school is located look for possibilities for your exploration –take notes—incorporate into Questions to Explore

short intro letters for teachers & parents (put both letters in notebook under artifacts) teachers: –where you’re from, family etc –experience with kids –jobs you’ve had –why you want to teach, what you want to learn this semester parents –probably shorter than letter to teacher, but cheerful and informative –check with coop to see if newsletter sent home and if you can include a brief introduction.

be there as a guest and a learner establish ritual of communication with co-op –continually express your interest, ignorance, desire to learn politely but firmly decline to be drawn into any ongoing conflicts carry on a meaningful ongoing conversation with your supervisor(s)—again, establish a ritual of communication take criticism well; be self critical be curious, brave, passionate, respectful, “perspectival,” flexible, observant, persistent, caring, hardworking....

goals for 321 a deep and strong base for being a teacher –a wise and brave teaching conscience an understanding of the moral nature of teaching –a well-grounded sense of how children (and people) learn and develop –knowledge that (understandings) how (skills, strategies, know-how) to (doing the right thing)

for Friday –short (1 or 2 paragraphs) word-processed discussion of your goals for yourself this semester –2 copies –name left, “goals” right, title center (lower) –Sign email –I check email once a day, late afternoon
