4.  Unrestricted Fund Meets ever-changing needs.  Designated Fund Directs gifts to specific agencies or purposes.  Field of Interest Addresses the needs in an important area of community life.  Donor Advised Fund Involves donors in the use of their gift.  Grantee Endowment Fund Enables nonprofit organization to establish endowments.  Scholarship Fund Helps young men and women pursue educational opportunities.  Memorial Fund Honors the memory of a loved one, and perpetuating charitable issues of importance to that individual. 12.  Started in 2006 with nine sophomore high school students forming the Youth Leadership Committee  Our goals are to : Introduce students to the world of philanthropy Educate students about community needs and local nonprofit organizations Give students the opportunity to address those needs through a competitive grantmaking process Encourage students to give back to the community through service learning projects The Philanthropy Project Youth Leadership Committee

14.  Each year, the YLC determine its funding priorities through group discussion and research  Typically five priorities are selected for its respective grant cycle  Example funding priorities: Environment Homelessness Medical or Dental Care for Underprivileged or Underserved Individuals Programs Addressing Substance Abuse Programs Addressing Teen Pregnancy Transportation for Elderly and/or Disabled Individuals The Philanthropy Project Determining Funding Priorities

15. The Philanthropy Project Stage One - Letter of Intent Process  Once funding priorities are selected, the YLC requests Letters of Intent (Typically in January)  You must apply using the online application located on the Foundation’s website (Typical deadline in mid-February)  Eligibility Criteria: You must be a qualified, tax-exempt agency serving:  Roanoke City  City of Salem  Botetourt County  Craig County  Roanoke County Project MUST meet one or more of the funding priorities  The YLC will review all Letter of Intent  Organizations who have been accepted will be invited by email to submit a full proposal (Typically in April)

16. The Philanthropy Project Stage Two – Full Proposal  TPP full proposals must be completed using an online application. (Typical deadline in May)  Additional Required Documents: Project Budget List of Board of Directors Current Annual Budget Most recent 990 or 990-N and statement of current financial condition  The YLC will review all full proposals and determine which agencies will be visited and/or interviewed (Typically in June-July)  Final grants decisions must be approved by the Foundation’s Board (Typically in August)  Grant recipients recognized by YLC at the Foundation’s Annual Celebration (November)

Letter of Intent (LOI)  LOI process began in 2007.  Our goals: Determine funding priorities of the Foundation using the Board of Governors Create a simple process for nonprofit organizations Bring potential grant opportunities to its attention  The Foundation’s Board determined the following funding priority areas: Basic Human Needs Economic Development Education

Letter of Intent Stage One  Agencies may submit LOIs anytime during the year  You must apply using the online application located on the Foundation’s website  Eligibility Criteria: You must be a qualified, tax-exempt agency serving:  Roanoke City  City of Salem  Alleghany County  Botetourt County  Craig County  Franklin County  Roanoke County Project MUST meet one or more of the funding priorities  Foundation staff will review all LOIs for further consideration

19. Letter of Intent (LOI) Stage Two – Full Proposal  If your LOI is selected, staff will notify the organization via email  The email will include: Stage Two – Full Proposal deadline (typically one month after receiving notification) Application instructions and login information  Additional Required Documents: Project Budget List of Board of Directors Current Annual Budget Most recent 990 or 990-N and statement of current financial condition

20. Letter of Intent (LOI) Stage Two – Full Proposal  Follow-up phone interviews and/or site visits may be conducted to learn more about the project  All Full Proposals are shared with the Foundation’s Community Programming Committee (CPC) for final decisions  CPC typically meets monthly  CPC may request more information  How long does this process take? 2-6 months

22.  The Spetzler Fund Addresses the broad needs of educational, child welfare and social opportunity programs. Geographical Areas: Cities of Roanoke and Salem and Roanoke County Typical Grant Size: $2,000-$5,000  Katherine Nelson Fishburn Foundation Provides support to cultural, educational and social service programs. Geographical Areas: Cities of Roanoke and Salem, Roanoke County, Botetourt County, and Craig County Typical Grant Size: $1,000-$3,000  The Roanoke Valley Children’s Fund Addresses the broad needs of children from prenatal care until their sixth birthday. Geographical Areas: Cities of Roanoke and Salem and Roanoke County Typical Grant Size: $3,000-$6,000 Winter Grants Cycle December 1 – February 1

23.  Larry Woodrow Vest Fund Provides support to charitable organizations serving Floyd County residents. Geographical Areas: Floyd County Typical Grant Size: $3,000-$20,000  Frances Parker Rupert Memorial Fund for Music and the Performing Arts Supports a wide range of qualified charitable organizations which work in the fields of music and/or the performing arts. Geographical Areas: Alleghany County, Bath County, Covington and Clifton Forge Typical Grant Size: $500-$1,000 Summer Grants Cycle June 1 – August 3

24.  You must apply using the online application located on the Foundation’s website.  Applications must be received by the deadline.  Additional documents required: List of Board of Directors Most recent 990 or 990-N and statement of current financial condition Project Budget Current Annual Budget  Once deadline has passed, proposals are distributed to the appropriate committees for review.  Decisions are typically made within a month after the deadline. 25.  Established in 2004 to allow women to become leaders in the field of philanthropy.  Open to any woman of any income level who makes the commitment to support RWF for 3 years at a level of $2,100 per year.  Funding Priorities include: Arts and Culture Health and Human Services Educational Programs Environmental Programs Roanoke Women’s Foundation A Fund of Foundation for Roanoke Valley

26.  Geographical Areas: Cities of Roanoke and Salem, Roanoke County, Botetourt County, Craig County, Smith Mt. Lake Region and the New River Valley  Applications are accepted once a year. Minimum grant request- $30,000  RWF’s Advisory Board selects those proposals to appear on ballot.
