Human Body Systems Unit 14 10A
2
Functions of Each System
Nervous – response Digestion – nutrients Integumentary – (skin) protection Excretory – waste Endocrine – (hormones) homeostasis Skeletal – support Muscular – movement Reproductive – reproduction Circulatory – transportation Immune – (lymphatic) disease protection Respiratory – gas exchange
3
Nervous System Organs: brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves
Function: recognizes and coordinates the body’s response to changes in its internal and external environments
5
Lymphatic/Immune System
Organs: white blood cells, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, lymph vessels Function: helps protect the body from disease; collects fluid lost from blood vessels and returns the fluid to the circulatory system
7
Endocrine System Organs: hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries (females), testes (males) Function: controls growth, development, & metabolism; maintains homeostasis
9
Integumentary System Organs: skin, hair, nails, sweat, and oil glands
Function: serves as a barrier against infection and injury; helps to regulate body temperature; provides protection against ultraviolet radiation from the sun
11
Skeletal System Organs: bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons
Function: protects organs, aids in movement, provides structure
13
Muscular System Organs: skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle
Function: works w/ skeletal system to produce voluntary movement; helps to circulate blood and move food through the digestive system
15
Digestive System Organs: mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small & large intestine; rectum Function: converts foods into simpler molecules that can be used by the cells of the body; absorbs food; eliminates wastes
17
Excretory System Organs: skin, lungs, kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra Function: eliminates waste products from the body in ways that maintain homeostasis
19
Circulatory System Organs: heart, blood vessels, blood
Function: brings oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells; fights infection; removes cell wastes, helps to regulate body temperature
22
Respiratory System Organs: nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs Function: provides oxygen needed for cellular respiration and removes excess carbon dioxide from the body
24
Reproductive System Organs: males – testes, epididymis, vas deferens, urethra, penis females – ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina Function: produces reproductive cells; females – nurtures & protects developing embryo
