2
Characteristics of Vertebrates
3
VERTEBRATES The main characteristics are:
Internal skeleton with spine.
4
VERTEBRATES They have three parts or regions: head, torso and tail.
5
VERTEBRATES The torso has four extremities which can be paws, wings and fins.
6
VERTEBRATES Their nervous system has an encephalon (brain) and a spinal cord. The encephalon is placed inside the skull and the spinal cord is placed inside the spine.
7
VERTEBRATES Sense organs are placed inside the head
8
VERTEBRATES Some characteristics of fish are:
9
VERTEBRATES Their skin has scales.
10
VERTEBRATES Their extremities are fins
11
VERTEBRATES Fish have gills
12
VERTEBRATES Some characteristics of Amphibians are:
13
VERTEBRATES Their skin is always moist
14
VERTEBRATES They have four extremities
15
VERTEBRATES They breathe using gills, lungs and skin.
16
VERTEBRATES Some characteristics of Reptiles are:
17
VERTEBRATES Their skin is dry and strong, it has scales.
18
VERTEBRATES They have four legs, which they use to run, climb and swim. Snakes don't have legs so they slither to move around.
19
VERTEBRATES Reptiles are cold-blooded
20
VERTEBRATES They lay eggs
21
VERTEBRATES Some of them have glands that produce venom to kill their prey.
22
VERTEBRATES Characteristics of Birds :
23
VERTEBRATES Birds don't have teeth, they have a beak
24
VERTEBRATES Their front legs become wings.
25
VERTEBRATES Their bodies are feathered
26
VERTEBRATES They are hot-blooded (endothermic).
27
VERTEBRATES They breathe with lungs
28
VERTEBRATES They lay eggs with shells
29
VERTEBRATES Characteristics of Mammals :
30
VERTEBRATES They are warm blooded (endothermic): they can maintain a constant body temperature.
31
VERTEBRATES They have hair
32
VERTEBRATES They have sudoriferous (sweat) glands
33
VERTEBRATES They have mammary (milk-secreting) glands. They produce milk to feed their young.
34
VERTEBRATES They have different types of teeth
35
VERTEBRATES They give birth to live young and provide protection and care for them before and after birth.
