Van Gogh was born in Groot Zundert in the Natherlands on March 30, 1853, to Thoedorus & Anna van Gogh. He grew up with 3 sisters and 2 brothers. They grew up on a Farm. He started school in 1864 where he learned 3 languages and drawing. He then rejected regular learning, and learned art from his cousin from 1879-85. Then went to school at Antwerp Academy from 1885-86. He worked for his uncle as an Art dealer when he was 16. In 1876 he quit to become a school teacher. Later that year he moved back to Holland and worked at a book store. In 1878 he became a Preacher. Then left to join his parents in Etten to work on the farm. On July 29, 1890 he attempted suicide. 2 days later he Died.

Van Gogh was a very successful artist, working mostly with paints. By the time he died he completed over 2,000 sketches, paintings, & portraits. People loved his amazing paintings.

Van Gogh painted his life in a sense. He painted life as a peasant, life in Poland and Netherlands, and his feelings. Van Gogh also had a love of nature. He drew and painted nests, animals, and flowers. As I read I found that Van Gogh was close to his family, especially his brother Theo. He Wrote loads of letters to him, and even lived with him for a while.

Van Gogh's "Portrait of Dr. Gachet” is the most expensive painting sold at an auction. It was sold for $85.2 million. He sold only 1 painting in his life, to his brother an art dealer. It was the "Red Vineyard at Arles.“ There are only 3 known photos of him. There all of him as a child. They think there might have found another photo of him as an adult. After his friend (Gauguin) mocked him he cut off his ear, and presented it to a woman. In his last days he painted 70 paintings.
