HELLO MINIONS!!! We have work to do.
2
WHAT ARE WE UP TO TODAY? Go over History of the PToE. PToE basics.
3
PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS Why is organization important? As students why must you be organized? What is a pattern? Where do you see patterns?
4
PTOE HISTORY 1869 63 elements were discovered Few gasses, few liquids, most solids Dmitri Mendeleev (men duh LAY ef) There are patterns here! Some had similar physical and chemical properties Wrote down some info on individual cards Melting Point Density Color Atomic mass & number of chemical bonds it can form
5
PTOE HISTORY AHA!!! He noticed a pattern of properties appeared when he placed them in order of increasing atomic mass! He also found that the properties repeated! After Fluorine was Sodium (neon wasn’t discovered yet) Sodium reacted with water like Lithium (Li) and Potassium (K).
6
HERE WAS HIS PTOE!!!
7
MODERN PTOE
8
A LOT OF STUFF!!! Solid, liquid, gas, not found in nature! Metal, metalloid, nonmetal Stable, kinda stable, unstable Listed in Periods and Groups A LOT TO TAKE IN!!! “Don’t Panic”
9
HERE IS HOW IT IS ORGANIZED! Period: Horizontal Row ↔ Contains a series of different elements, just like a days of the week on a calendar! Left side: HIGHLY REACTIVE!!! Middle: Less reactive metals Right Side: Metalloids then nonmetals.
10
HERE IS HOW IT IS ORGANIZED! Group: Vertical Row. ↕ Also known as “families” These elements are similar to each other, like on a monthly calendar all the days that are “Monday” or “Saturday”. Group 1 reacts violently with water Group 17 reacts violently with group 1 Group 18 tend to be stable
11
MODERN PTOE
12
LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER…
13
SOME STUFF TO GET STRAIGHT… Elements all have multiple isotopes with individual atomic weights so the mass is determined by the weighted mean of all of the isotopes.
14
HOW ELEMENTS FORM… NUCLEAR FUSION!!!
15
NEXT UP… Questions & Homework
