2 CASARA Navigation Course

3 Aim of CASARA Training To certify members to assist the Canadian Forces in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. To create in members an awareness of flight safety and defensive flying practices

4 CASARA Training There are four areas of training:
BASIC – covering the minimum requirements for CASARA aircrew certification CONTINUATION – yearly activity required to maintain currency and certification (cont’d)

5 CASARA Training ADVANCED – Searchmaster, CASARA Search Coordinator, etc. SPECIAL -, Company Aviation Safety Officer (CASO), Pilot Decision Making, Standard First Aid, survival, etc.

6 CASARA Training Within the BASIC training requirement there are four phases depending on what level you aspire to. Phase 1: Basic knowledge of SAR operations. Phase 2: Training to become a certified spotter.

7 CASARA Training Phase 3: CASARA navigator training.
Phase 4: CASARA pilot training.

8 CASARA Training The purpose of this course is to provide CASARA navigator training.

9 Navigator’s Duties & Responsibilities
Pre-Flight Assists the pilot with all preparations Attends all briefings with the pilot Flight – The navigator aids the pilot in: Keeping the aircraft on track Monitoring engine instruments for irregularities Keeping a lookout for other aircraft (Cont’d)

10 Navigator’s Duties & Responsibilities
Post-Flight – The navigator makes himself/herself available to: the Searchmaster and The CASARA Search Coordinator For debriefing and possible future tasks

11 CASARA Navigator Training
To qualify as a CASARA navigator you must: Complete this navigator’s course and all the practical exercises. Complete Four (4) flights of not less than one (1) hour each. Complete a certification flight which includes an ELT homing.

12 Currency Requirements
To remain current, a CASARA Navigator must complete annually: Four hours of ground training. Four flights of at least one hour duration. Four search patterns appropriate to your area Two ELT homings One Aural Null ELT homing

13 CASARA Navigator Training
This course consists of the following sections: Course Introduction Roles and responsibilities Training Currency Course Content Aircraft & Safety Aircraft types Engines & Instruments Clothing (cont’d)

Search and Rescue Procedures, Search Planning, Electronic Searching, Visual Search Plans Reports and Returns
