3
Human Biology and Health 1.1 Vocabulary Cells – Basic unit of structure and function in living things. ◦ Smallest unit of organization Membrane – Forms the boundary of the cell. Nucleus – Control center that directs the cell’s activities. Cytoplasm – Jellylike substance between the membrane and nucleus where all the organelles may be found.
4
Note Taking Cells make up tissue. MEN C DRINCS This memory peg will help you remember the tissues and systems in our body. MEN C = Tissues DRINCS = Systems
5
MEN C DRINCS Muscle Tissue – Carries out movement Epithelial Tissue – Covers the surfaces of your body, inside and out. Skin and the lining of the digestive system. Nerve Tissue – Carries messages back and forth between the brain and other parts of the body. Brain, spinal cord, and nerves Connective Tissue – Supports the body and connects all its parts. Blood, fat, cartilage, bones, or tendons
6
Note Taking Tissue makes up organs. Organs ◦ Made up of different kinds of tissue. ◦ Performs a specific job. ◦ Heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, skin
7
Note Taking Organs makes up systems. System – Group of organs that work together to perform a major function.
8
MEN C DRINCS Digestive – takes in food and breaks it down. Respiratory – takes in oxygen. Immune – fights disease. Nervous – detects and interprets information. Circulatory – carries materials to and from body cells. Skeletal – supports the body and works with muscle to allow movement.

11
Human Biology and Health 1.2 Vocabulary Homeostasis – The process by which an organism’s internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment. ◦ Example – Body’s return to normal after a scare.
12
Human Biology and Health 1.2 Vocabulary Stress – Reaction of your body and mind to threatening, challenging, or disturbing events. ◦ More blood goes to the brain. ◦ Hearing ability increases. ◦ Sweating increases. ◦ Heart rate increases. ◦ Digestive system slows. ◦ Pupils of eyes widen to take in more light. ◦ Muscles tense. ◦ Body cells release energy faster.
13
Adrenaline ◦ Chemical in the body that is released during the alarm stage in your body’s physical response to stress. ◦ Gives you a burst of energy. ◦ Prepares you to take quick action Human Biology and Health 1.2 Vocabulary
14
Fight-or-Flight ◦ Another physical response to stress. ◦ Caused by adrenaline. ◦ Prepares you to fight the stressor or to take flight and escape. Human Biology and Health 1.2 Vocabulary
