What will S3 look like? Pupils will attend English in two blocks of time on the timetable as at present Four x 50 minute periods a week in S3 (three in S4)

No Standard Grade...instead continue: developing four capacities – successful learner; confident individual; responsible citizen; effective contributor developing skills for learning, skills for life, skills for work

Planning for the future Progression into senior phase - pupils will all study English in S4 S3 S4 S5 S6 3 rd /4 th level National 4National 5 Higher 4 th level National 4/5 National 5 Higher Advanced Higher 4 th level/ National 4

What will the course consist of? Still developing four modes of communication: Reading Writing Talking Listening Developing skills under three main headings: Communication Interpersonal Thinking

What will be familiar/different? Study of texts Understanding, analysis and evaluation Production of written work Creative/imaginative ; discursive; informative Participation in class/group discussion and delivery of solo talk Challenges, presentation, research… variety of texts will expand in recognition of changing world Evidence of attainment will come from a much broader range of sources and pupils will be more involved in its collation Added Value Unit

NATIONAL FOUR COURSE STRUCTURE English: Analysis & Evaluation English: Creation & Production Literacy Added Value Unit: Assignment SKILLS DEVELOPED: Pupils will focus on demonstrating their understanding, analysis and evaluation skills through the study of: Written texts Spoken language SKILLS DEVELOPED: Pupils will focus on their writing skills by creating and producing: Written texts which are appropriate to purpose & audience and are technically accurate. Pupils will focus on their spoken communication by: Taking part in spoken interactions which use a format and structure appropriate to the audience. SKILLS DEVELOPED: Pupils will demonstrate a range of skills which cover four key areas: Reading & understanding written texts. Listening to & understanding spoken communication Writing technically accurate texts Talking to an audience for a set purpose. SKILLS DEVELOPED: Pupils will: Read a range of texts Select relevant information Evaluate & analyse Present & respond to questions ASSESSMENT: Various assessments may be completed in class through the study of a range of texts (poetry, drama, prose, non – fiction, media etc) i.e. close reading tasks, critical essay writing, presentations etc. PASS or FAIL ASSESSMENT: Various written and spoken assessments may be completed in class. i.e. different styles of written pieces (creative, informative etc), group discussion, presentations etc PASS or FAIL ASSESSMENT: Various assessments may be completed in class through the study of a text or topic ( non – fiction, fiction, speeches, media etc) i.e. written responses, solo talk, group discussion, close reading etc. PASS or FAIL ASSESSMENT: Pupils will investigate a chosen topic and present their findings in an appropriate format, either written or oral. Topics will be discussed with the teacher before the investigation and assessment.
