Two types of soil found below the escarpment: 1. Sandy Loam – high in nutrients and organic matter; holds water well 2. Clay – made from tiny particles that swell when they are wet Clay soils stay cool longer in the spring Highly fertile, transferring more nutrients to the vines

Micro climate: a local atmospheric zone where the climate differs from the surrounding area In Niagara, the unique micro-climate is caused by the interaction of: Lake Ontario The escarpment

In the spring: Water from Lake Ontario keeps temperatures cooler Allows for later blossoming period Minimal chance of frost after blooming In the fall: Water from Lake Ontario is warm Keeps the temperatures warmer Growing and harvesting period is prolonged
