Longitude and Latitude
Latitude – lines on a map that run east and west. These lines are called parallels. Like a ladder Equator – the midpoint for latitude Longitude – lines on a map that run north and south. These lines are called meridians. Prime Meridian – the midpoint for longitude
4
Using Degrees Degrees – unit of measurement that describes the distance between lines of latitude and longitude Example 60⁰N Global grid – makes it possible to pinpoint exact locations on a map. 38⁰ N, 77⁰ W Latitude, Longitude
5
Directions Cardinal directions – north, south, east, and west
Intermediate directions – northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast
6
Steps to finding locations using latitude and longitude: Example 45⁰ N, 120⁰ W
Start at the equator to find latitude. Go North 45⁰. Put a dot on that line. Start at the Prime Meridian to find longitude. Go West 120⁰. Put a dot on that line. Find where those two lines meet. *Latitude is always North or South and is always the first number Longitude is always West or East and is always the second number.
