General SHOP SAFETY

In technology education, SAFETY is regarded as essential for at least two reasons. #1 – The natural concern for people’s welfare. #2 – Financial.

Safety is of prime importance in the operation of all the power tools used in the technology education laboratory. Using them properly for the job intended is important. Being safety conscious and using them safely is essential. Serious accidents generally do not occur when safety procedures are followed.

Dressing for SAFETY

Wear safety glasses at all times! Avoid loose fitting clothing that may get caught in the moving parts of power tools. Wear closed-toe shoes (no flip flops or heels) Keep long hair secured. Remove neck ties, rings, wrist watches, neck chains and all other jewelry.

Cleaning for SAFETY

Keep floor clear of tools, materials and other debris that could cause slip and fall. Dispose of trash and debris in the approved container. It is YOUR job to clean up, not the teachers

General Laboratory SAFETY

Always walk - - do not run. Never talk to or interrupt anyone who is operating a machine. Turn off the machine and notify the instructor is a problem occurs No horseplay or touching people Always turn off a machine when you are done – never let a machine “coast”

DO NOT use a machine until you have been certified Keep your hands and fingers away from moving parts and blades. The floor around the machine should be kept clean. Use a brush to clean machine and bench surfaces when the machine is off.

Always use approved eye protection. Make all adjustments on power tools with the power off and power tool completely stopped. Pay attention at all times! Never use power tools in contact with water..
