3 Snack Please send in one healthy easy to eat snack everyday. We are a peanut-free grade level. Please do not send in any snacks that contain any nut products.

4 Discipline –Character Counts Pillar System and Clip Chart –Respect –Responsibility –Caring –Fairness –Trustworthiness –Citizenship

5 Rewards Quality Kid stickers are awarded to children for showing good character and outstanding behavior. Table points are given for tables following directions and having good character. Character Counts money is also given to those showing outstanding character which can be redeemed at the school store.

6 Take Home Folder Your child will come home with their take home folder each day. It is their responsibility to share it with you and return it to school the next day. This folder contains: –Daily Behavior Chart –Monthly Reading Log –Reading Newsletter –Math Homework –Weekly One-Minute Fluency Passage

7 Behavior Chart and Reading Log Sent home every month. Students should be reading at home and filling in their reading times on the reading log. Students should share their daily behavior log with parents. Parents, please sign each night. Pillar sheets will come home in folders if a discipline problem occurred. Please sign and return as well.

8 Reading Newsletter Each week a Reading Street Newsletter will come home in your child’s take home folder. It will contain the following: * Phonics information * High Frequency Words * Vocabulary Words

9 Grading Please check Powerschools to monitor your child’s progress. User ID available in front office. This is in lieu of progress reports.

10 Homework A newsletter will come home in the take home folder each Monday Math homework for all students will come home as lessons are completed in class. Practice sorting weekly word list. 20 minutes of reading each night. One minute fluency/comprehension questions or vocabulary practice. (part of 20 min.)

11 Curriculum Arizona Career and Readiness Standards (see website for a detailed look at all the standards) Reading Street: Small Group (leveled readers), Daily 5 Friday assessment on comprehension and vocabulary. Phonics: Words Their Way - no weekly test – students assessed in small group based on individualized word lists. Grade is noted as a standard on report card. Math: Engage NY Writing: Write from the Beginning Science: FOSS (Full Option Science System) Social Studies: Harcourt

12 Reading Reading Street – Leveled Reading Material Oral Reading Fluency December Benchmark – 1 st grade = 47 wpm 2 nd grade = 100 wpm May Benchmark – 1 st grade = 69 wpm 2 nd grade = 111 wpm DIBELS benchmark scores are in your child’s Data Binders and will be sent home. Literary Elements (plot, characters, setting, theme, problem, solution) Social Studies and Science share a cross-curricular relationship with Reading Street.

13 Writing Write From the Beginning & Beyond Includes Thinking Maps and Mini- lessons to produce quality pieces of writing. Thinking Journals and Non-fiction Journals are utilized by each student.

14 Phonics Words Their Way Moving away from “Friday Spellers”. Students are actively constructing their own knowledge of spelling patterns. Students sort and create tree maps with word cards in class.

22 PDSA Goal setting system for our class. Plan –What are we working on? Do –What will we do to learn it? Study –What were the results of our efforts? Act –What’s our next plan of action? Individual goal tracking in Data Folders.

23 Star Student Student will bring the schedule for the week and poster to complete for the Monday they begin their week! Students are chosen by drawing sticks.

24 Conferences Conferences will be held the week of October 20 th. (Early Release days) A sign-up preference form will be sent home the week before. Conferences are 15 minutes. If you feel more time will be needed we will need to set a day convenient for both of us.

25 Birthdays You may send in a birthday treat for their special day. Please send in the treat in the morning. All treats need to be store bought items.

26 Website Please visit our class website for class information such as daily schedules, calendar, etc.. You can access our website through the Gavilan Peak main site. There is a teacher website tab at the top.
