Go Math!/Common Core State Standards for Mathematics K-5 Leadership Training
2
OBJECTIVE Participants will gain an understanding of Common Core State Standards for Content and Mathematical Practices. Participants will be able to utilize components of Go Math! to assist students to achieve conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application of the Common Core Content Standards. Participants will utilize collaboration time to develop a rigorous mathematics lesson.
3
Go Math! Common Core, K-5 Part 1: Common Core State Standards: Provide information on the CCSS Standards to include the following: Shifts: Focus, Coherence, Rigor Mathematical Practices - Participants will form 8 groups; each group will use 3-4 resources to become an expert on one of the Mathematical Practices. Each group will share with the large group. Progressions - Match/Sort identified grade level skill with progression
4
Balance between conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application The Common Core standards demand a balance between conceptual understanding (mathematical principles and relationships, or why), procedural fluency (skill in carrying out procedures, or how), and application (solving real-world problems, or when). Each of the three should get individual focus, but students also benefit when they are taught in conjunction with one another. The new standards place equal importance on all three components.
5
Eight Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the understanding of others 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
