Objectives: Correct run-on sentences; answer text-dependent questions Directions: Copy and fix the sentences with a comma, period, or a semicolon. 1. We ate at Tweet yesterday it was yummy. 2. Members of my family have lived in Chicago Illinois Methuen Massachusetts and San Francisco California. 3. It seems like the holidays are starting even earlier this year I really wish I had a cough drop. 4. Write a sentence on how you think Malcolm’s life has changed since his days as Detroit Red. Semi-colons are used in two situations: 1. To connect two independent clauses (example: I love my Uncle Ralph; he has the best stamp collection.). 2. When listing items with descriptions (example: When I went around the world, I traveled to Athens, Greece; London, England; and Tokyo, Japan.). Only use a semi-colon with two independent clauses when you believe those clauses have an important relationship. Do not over-use semi-colons; your college professors (and teachers) will hate you. Notes from last week – these should be in your notebook! Important Notes

TUESDAY Partner packets from last week are past due! Text dependent questions should be in your English II notebook – 10 more minutes In Black Muslims, Malcolm continues to try to grow the Nation of Islam despite criticism from the media. He has to spend a lot of time on the phone defending N of I; the FBI even becomes suspicious. More and more, Malcolm is taking on the lead role and speaking for Elijah Muhammad especially once EM becomes ill and has to retire to Arizona. Many people within the N of I are not happy about the role Malcolm has taken on. Read closely pp. 307-313 and summarize main points in your notebook

WEDNESDAY Text dependent questions should be in your English II notebook – 1 st and 2 nd periods – these should be out on your desk if I didn’t grade you yesterday. In “Black Muslims” and “Icarus,” Malcolm continues to try to grow the Nation of Islam despite criticism from the media. He has to spend a lot of time on the phone defending N of I; the FBI even becomes suspicious. More and more, Malcolm is taking on the lead role and speaking for Elijah Muhammad especially once EM becomes ill and has to retire to Arizona. Many people within the N of I are not happy about the role Malcolm has taken on. In “Out,” Elijah M. faces allegations that he fathered two illegitimate children with temple secretaries. EM basically tells Malcolm that this is true, and MX thinks EM will publicly apologize, but he doesn’t. Read closely pp. 307-308; discuss

WEDNESDAY (Cont.) After MX’s comment about JFK’s assassination, EM silences MX for a 90-day period. MX realizes this is just a way of getting MX out of The Nation of Islam. He wants to branch out on his own, but first borrows money from his sister to go on a pilgrimage (holy trip) to Mecca. BEGIN READING ON p. 325
