Unit 3 Multiplication & Division Parent Preview

Multiplication Facts  Students will be timed on their multiplication facts On Grade students must master their 0-10 facts Above Grade students must master 0-12 facts.

Multiplication Strategies  Groups of: 3 groups of 4 = 12  Repeated Addition: Add 3 Four separate times 3 + 3 = 6 + 3 = 9 + 3 = 12

Multiplication Strategies Continued  Arrays: 3 x 5 (down x across) x x x x x  Number Lines: (see next slide)

Number Line Multiplication Spaces x Jumps 5 x 6 0 5 10 15 20 25 30

Division Strategies  Groups of: 21 ÷ 3 = 5  Repeated Subtraction: 21 ÷ 3

Fact Families 48 6 x ÷ ______ x _______________ ÷ ________ _____ x ________________ ÷ ________

Comparison Multiplication  Students will be able represent multiplication through pictures Sally Kelly Sally has ____ times as many pandas as Kelly does.

Multiplication & Division Word Problems  Students must be able to write their own multiplication word problem Ex: Karen has 5 oranges. Jeff has 2 times as many oranges as Karen does. How many oranges does Jeff have?

Multiplication & Division Word Problems Continued…  When given a word problem students will need to evaluate the problem to determine if they need to multiply or divide. Ex Multiplication: There are 5 trees in Susan’s backyard. There are 4 birds sitting on each tree. How many total birds are there? Ex Division: Jason has 40 baseball cards and 8 shoeboxes. He wants to put an even number of cards in each box. How many cards will go in each box?

Estimating the Product 45 50 x 6 300

3 rd Grade Challenge

Expressions  Use the strategy of PEMDAS P Parenthesis E Exponents (we will not solve problems with exponents) M Multiplication D Division A Addition S Subtraction (56 ÷ 7) x 4 =

Commutative Property If number sentence is reversed you will always have the same answer  ( 4 + 3 = 7 OR 3 + 4 = 7……5 x 6 = 30 OR 6 x 5 = 30)

Commutative Property  If an addition/multiplication number sentence is reversed the sum/product will remain the same Example: 4 + 3 = 7 OR 3 + 4 = 7 Example: 4 x 3 = 12 OR 3 x 4 = 12

Factors and Multiples  Factor – numbers that multiply together to get a product Factors of 10 are: 1, 10, 5, 2  Multiple – Product of a number x number Multiples of 10 are: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, etc.

Solving for the Unknown  The unknown will be represented by a letter (ex: x, y, p) 46 + p = 50  p = 4  Function Tables Rule: y = x + 5 XY 1015 2025 3035 4045 5055

Solving for the Unknown Word Problem  Jason has 25 toy cars. He adds in some toy trucks. He now has a total of 52 toys.  Students will have to identify… What 25 represents What 52 represents What the unknown is  Students will have to… Create an equation Solve for the unknown
