Adopt-A-Physicist The Physics Bunch

John Hubisz

Played baseball and football in high school Was offered a one year contract with the Lynn Red Sox Wanted to go to college and study engineering Has over 22,000 books in his home library Never missed a day of school as a teacher or a student Is a member of AAPT (American Association of Physics Teachers)

Education Never changed major; just kept adding new ones Ph. D. in Physics Physics background helped him work on the interface between science and religion/theology Favorite lab done in High School— measuring horsepower

Job First job at age 5 was delivering newspapers At age 15 began working at the local drugstore Did theoretical work for Centre for Research in Earth and Space Science in Toronto 50+ years as a teacher –Mostly a physics teacher –Taught other courses such as religion, theology, mathematics, etc. –First taught in Canada –Taught in High Schools –Employed by North Carolina State University

Other Facts Thinks physics is interesting Doesn’t like when people make mistakes; likes to teach and help them learn why they made that mistake Likes to work with middle school aged science classes

Waits each winter for the Phillies’ opening day Lives in Ithaca, New York Observes brown dwarf stars Works with the 200” Hale Telescope Loves to write

Education 4 th year graduate student in Astronomy at Cornell University Undergraduate at Caltech Had a two year job on Wall Street at Goldman Sachs calculating quantitative risk Has a Master’s Degree

Job Employed by Cornell University Observational Astrophysicist and Astronomer Uses instruments at Palomar Observatory to observe brown dwarf stars Uses binary stars to infer the masses of the brown dwarfs. Helped confirm/discover five new stars, one which may have been a gigantic planet (many times larger than Jupiter) in orbit around it

Other Facts Always wanted to study Astronomy and Physics Has always been fascinated by space and the mystery of the unknown reaches Was put in awe by the Stardust and Deep Impact missions by NASA, in which robotic crafts were put into space to orbit a comet
