2. COURSE SELECTION PROCESS High school counselors gave presentations to the 8 th grade classes at Boston, Kesling, and St. Johns last week The counseling staff will return to these schools and assist students with their final course selections

3. HOW MANY CHOICES ARE THERE? 8 TH grade students have to decide on 15 course selections for their freshman year These selections can come from 38 different courses offered to 9 th grade students

4. NEW GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS The State of Indiana has adopted four diploma types for students entering the 9 th grade A general diploma remains The CORE 40 diploma becomes the default diploma for La Porte High School Students A newly defined Core 40 with Academic Honors diploma is available A newly defined Core 40 with Technical Honors diploma is also available

5. The Core 40 Diploma 48 credits are required for graduation (one credit for each trimester course earning a passing grade) and must come from the following areas: Language Arts 8 credits Social Studies6 credits Mathematics6 credits Science6 credits Health and Wellness1 credit Physical Education2 credits Directed Electives5 credits General Electives14 credits

6. ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS REQUIREMENTS 8 Credits from a combination of literature, composition, and speech It is required that students pass a speech course

7. Social Studies Requirements 2 credits in United States History 1 credit in United States Government 1 credit in Economics 2 credits from World History/Civilization or Geography/History of the World 2 credits in World History/Civilization OR 2 credits in Geography/History of the World

8. Mathematics Requirements Algebra I, Geometry, & Algebra II Students are required to take a math or physics course during their junior of senior year.

9. Science Requirements 2 credits in Biology 2 credits in chemistry, physics, or integrated chemistry-physics 2 additional credits in Core 40 science courses

10. Directed Elective Requirements The 5 credits must come from: World Languages Fine Arts Career-technical

11. Core 40 with Academic Honors Additional Requirements Earn 2 additional Core 40 math credits and Earn 6-8 Core 40 world language credits, and Earn 2 Core 40 fine arts credits, and Earn a grade of “C” or above in courses that will count toward the diploma, and Have a grade point average of “B” or above, and Complete one of the following: Two Advanced Placement courses and corresponding AP exams Academic, transferable dual high school/college courses resulting in 6 college credits One Advanced Placement course and corresponding AP exam and academic transferable dual high school/college course(s) resulting in 3 college credits Score 1200 or higher combined SAT math and verbal Score a 26 composite ACT score

12. Core 40 with Technical Honors Additional Requirements Earn a grade of “C” or above in courses that will count toward the diploma, and Have a grade point average of “B” or above, and Complete a career-technical program resulting in 8-10 credits, and The student must earn a state-recognized certification or certificate of technical achievement in the career-technical program

13. So, What Are My Course Choices? All freshmen (9 th graders) must take: 3 trimesters of English (lit 9., comp 9., & English 9 plus) 2-3 trimesters of Math ( Algebra I – 1, 2, 3 or accelerated Geometry 1,2) 2 trimesters of either Biology or Earth Science
