2  8.8 The student will investigate and solve problems involving volume and surface area of cones and pyramids, using concrete materials and practical situations.  8.10 The student will describe, classify, and construct plane figures and solid figures, including prisms, pyramids, cylinders, and cones.  7.9 The student will investigate and solve problems involving the volume and surface area of a rectangular prisms and cylinders, using concrete materials and practical situations to develop formulas.

3 The purpose of the presentation is to provide middle school students with an interactive way to learn how to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

4 A parallelogram with all sides congruent and all angles congruent. WIDTH LENGTH Area= length · width

5 LENGTH WIDTH A parallelogram with all angles congruent. Area= length · width

6 A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. BASE HEIGHT Area= Base · Height

7 A polygon* having three sides. *Polygon: a simple closed figure in a plane formed by three or more line segments. BASE HEIGHT Area= 1/2 base · height

8 HEIGHT A B A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel lines. Area= 1/2 · height (a + b)

9 The set of all points in a plane that are the same distance from a given point called the center. RADIUS Area= πr 2

10 A prism with rectangles as bases. length width height Surface Area= 2lw + 2wh + 2lh Volume= length · width · height

11 A prism with triangle bases. Surface Area= 2(1/2 base · height)* + (bottom)side +(front)side + (back)side *Multiply by two because you have two triangles Volume= 1/2 · base · height · length

12 A shape in space that has two parallel and congruent circular bases. Radius height Surface Area= πr 2 + 2πrh Volume= πr 2 h

13 Side radius A shape in space that has a circular base and one vertex Surface Area= πr 2 + πrs Volume= 1/3 πr 2 h

14 A figure in space with three or more triangular faces and a base in the shape of a polygon. Base/Length height Surface Area= Length Width + 4*(1/2 bh) Width *multiply by 4 because you have 4 triangular faces. Volume=1/3 L W H

16 On a separate piece of paper, work out problems 1-5. If you forget the formulas, click on the button with an “I” in the middle and it will give you the list of formulas. Once finished, click on the button with the “A” in the center for the correct answer. Click on any part of the screen to go to the next problem. To hear the directions, click the sound button.

31 Merrill’s Pre-Algebra Book Chapter 13 Measuring Area and Volume: Practice Problems in the Book Practice Worksheets Other Activities: Students can draw and color pictures using 15 different geometric shapes. Students can create paper nets of different figures for a more concrete representation of shapes. Students can make a slit book of all formulas and pictures of the geometric shapes.
