5. Math Vocabulary Review Perimeter: the distance around a shape. – To find the perimeter of a shape, add the lengths.

Area: the measure of a surface inside a shape. – Area is commonly measured in square units. – The area of a surface is the number of unit squares and fractions of unit squares needed to cover the surface without overlaps and/or gaps. – Different ways of writing square units: Square inch = in² Square meter = m² Square centimeter = cm²

7. Finding the Area for a Rectangle: If the length of the base and the width of a rectangle are known, the area can be found by multiplying. Formula: Area of a rectangle = length x width A = l x w

8. Finding the Area for a Parallelogram: Height is the distance perpendicular to the base of a figure. Any side of the parallelogram can be the base. The choice of the base determines the height.
