Introduction to Anatomy
Miss Van Heuven
2
Gross Anatomy The study of the organs, parts, and structures of a body that are visible to the naked eye
3
Regional Anatomy The study of anatomy by regions Examples:
The entire arm The chest cavity The back
4
Systemic Anatomy The study of anatomy by systems Examples:
the entire skeletal system the entire muscular system
5
Surface Anatomy Study of everything on the surface of the body No dissection or internal images needed
6
Microscopic Anatomy The study of microscopic structures of the body (tissues and organs) Can only be seen with a microscope Also known as “Histology”
7
Cellular Anatomy The study of the anatomy of cells within the body Different cells have different structures
8
Developmental Anatomy
The study of structural changes of the body from fertilization to maturity (This is how we know where we “should” be at a certain age)
9
Embryology The study of a baby from fertilization to birth (This is how we know where a baby “should” be each month of pregnancy)
10
Activity Use your fingers to hold up the correct number: 1.) Gross Anatomy 2.) Regional Anatomy 3.) Systemic Anatomy 4.) Surface Anatomy 5.) Microscopic Anatomy 6.) Cellular Anatomy 7.) Developmental Anatomy 8.) Embryology

ACTIVITY (Teacher SLIDE)
ACTIVITY QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: Knowing all the bones of the body = SYSTEMIC Anatomy of Muscle Tissue = MICROSCOPIC Check-up for a 1 year old= DEVELOPMENTAL Cells of Bone Tissue = CELLULAR, MICROSCOPIC Anatomy of the face (nose, ear, mouth, etc.) = SURFACE The heart = GROSS The respiratory system = SYSTEMIC Ultrasound pictures of a fetus = EMBRYOLOGY Physical for a 5 year old to make sure he/she is growing= DEVELOPMENTAL The arm = REGIONAL, GROSS The leg = REGIONAL, GROSS Studying cancer cells = CELLULAR, MICROSCOPIC The head = REGIONAL, GROSS Physical for a pregnant woman and her soon-to-be baby = EMBRYOLOGY Anatomy of the foot that we can see = GROSS, SURFACE, REGIONAL Testing your Cardiovascular System = SYSTEMIC

Hierarchy of the Human Body
The human body is organized in a hierarchy Hierarchy = a system of categorization from big to small, rich to poor, etc. Our body’s hierarchy goes from simple to complex
