Types of Dance Just like music, all of the various styles can be group into two types. Popular Art

Popular Dance Popular dance- not concerned with artistic expression, just for fun Just as today all the popular dances came out of the “clubs” of the day. Burlesque- a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects (sounds like what style of drama?)

Burlesque Shows Actually featured all kinds of performances with the same types of music we have been talking about, Ragtime, Dixieland, etc. Stripteases- “sexy” dances by “provocatively” dressed women were the most popular acts.
