2 What is Spyware Malware – (Malicious Software) A general term to encompass unwanted software on a personal computer Spyware - installs code that reports info Adware - notes what Internet sites the user visits and tailors advertising Hijackers – Rogue website redirects/loads instead of home url Worms - program that transmits a payload over a network to infect other computers Viruses – an.exe program that when run, copies itself and infects a computer Trojan Horse – bundled with desirable software and disguised

3 Yummm…Cookies Cookies are delicious but fattening Allowing Cookies makes web pages work properly and load faster Cookies are tiny bits of code that are stored in a temporary folder Clear Cookies after each internet session

4 Settings Internet Explorer Tools inPrivate browsing (ie 8) Delete browsing history Internet Options Popup Blocker Toolbars (popular as Trojan Horses – w/Java, Adobe)

5 Backups Keep folders organized and easy to copy to a CD or DVD-RW (my documents, my pictures) Create manual backups of most important documents Use System Restore http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system- restore/

6 Programs to Install for Preventative Measures Always update Windows (set autoupdate from Control Panel), Java Norton Antivirus (pro – good stuff, con – expensive, gets hooks into memory) CNET.com top downloads 1.AVG Virus Protection 2.Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware Run them every week!

7 Never….. Open a file from within an e-mail if you don’t know the sender Click on an advertisement from a webpage Go to any searched sites without.com /.net /.gov /.edu Don’t believe anything that says you must install a program to fix a problem Download from unknown sites-only from trusted sites (like CNET). Look for BBB or other certifications. File share or use file sharing sites Download without being careful (watch for toolbars etc.) Believe in quick money schemes or free stuff on the internet

8 I’m Infected! What do I do? AV.EXE or AV360.EXE Antivirus 360, Antivirus XP 2010, XP Antispyware 2010, XP Antivirus Pro, XP Internet Security (2010), Vista Internet Security (2010), Vista Antivirus Pro (2010), Win7 or Vista Guardian CTRL-ALT-DELETE brings up Task Manager Click on AV.EXE program to stop PROCESS Run Malwarebytes OR PF8 to boot in safe mode if virus won’t allow task manager to start Download RKILL (http://www.technibble.com/rkill-repair-tool-of-the-week/)http://www.technibble.com/rkill-repair-tool-of-the-week/) Install and put icon on desktop Reboot and try to click on it to run before pc boots up and.exe starts Run Malwarebytes

9 Pest Control Manual Removal CTRL-ALT-DELETE brings up Task Manager Click on program to stop PROCESS Delete AV.EXE file from folders, open My Computer and type %AppData% in Vista, or search Program files in XP Edit the Registry (regedit) (followed by rogue virus name) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\AV360 Remove from startup programs (msconfig)

10 When all else fails…. Boot into Safe Mode using PF8 to save files and data Reinstall Vista http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Installing-and- reinstalling-Windows-Vista
