Three Types of Bullying
Definition: Bullying is a pattern of repeated behavior that is meant to hurt someone (physically, emotionally, or verbally) and usually has an imbalance of power (physical or social). Physical Bullying Physical bullying is when a person physically tries to hurt another person on purpose and repeatedly. (Kicking, punching…)

Verbal Bullying Verbal bullying is when a person calls another person a mean name or uses hurtful words on purpose and repeatedly. This can include hurtful words on text messages and the internet.

Emotional Bullying is when a person tries to hurt emotionally another person on purpose and repeatedly. Emotional bullying includes threatening, leaving another person out of a group, trying to keep friends from being friends a person, and rolling his/her eyes at someone .

Emotional bullying also includes joining in and/or laughing when someone else is being teased in a hurtful manner. Spreading rumors about someone else is also a type of emotional bullying.

Roles in a Bullying Situation Person Display Bullying Behavior Target Bystander

Bullying Behavior Person displaying bullying behavior: hitting, pushing, threatening, hurtful teasing, spreading rumors, name calling. If you are the bully: Acknowledge you need to change. Apologize for negative behavior.

Target The person being bullied.
If you are a target: Tell the bully to “Stop, I don’t like that.” Make new friends. Go places with friends if you are uncomfortable Report It. Talk with your parents, teachers, friends, and anybody who you respect

Bystander The person watching or seeing the bullying happening. Choosing to ignore the bullying is the same as supporting it. If you are a bystander: Refuse to be an audience for the bully incident. If appropriate and safe, ask the bully to stop. (Knock it off! or Cut it Out!). Be a friend to the target and invite them to help you. (Come play on our team.)
