Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Presentation by Dott.sa Laura Martuscelli, Dept assistant The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
2
Location The Department is hosted by the magnificent building of the Faculty of Engineering, in Mesiano, amid splendid mountains and with a spectacular view on the Adige valley. This position allows researchers and students to work and study in an important University being at the same time in a quiet environment where scientific relevance and quality of life can be combined.
3
Short historical sketch The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA) of the University of Trento was created in January 1990 when the former Department of Engineering (active since 1985) grew too large and required the splitting into three new Departments. Since its institution, DICA has always promoted and coordinated internationally oriented research on environment and land protection. In this context both applied and base research is conducted. The external funding income has constantly improved during the years.
4
In 2008, DICA employs xxx persons: 13 full professors 13 associate professors 17 assistant professors 11 administrative and technical staff 24 doctoral students 22 research fellows Head: Prof. Aronne Armanini Deputy Head: Prof. G. B. Benciolini Faculty and Staff
5
The advance knowledgeeducate students The mission of DICA is to advance knowledge and educate students in science and technology that will best serve for the protection of the environment and the sustainable use of natural resources. Mission Doctoral School in Environmental Engineering CUDAM (research centre of excellence) Research groups on specialized disciplines Means Laboratories
6
Main research interests The activity of the department focuses mainly on land protection and preservation with particular emphasis on: mountain regions water resources river and estuary dynamics analysis of the environmental impact of infrastructures urban settlements design of ecological and energy saving buildings interaction between energy and environment surveying and remote sensing
7
Research groups Environmental protection and management Environment and land use analysis Building design
8
BUILDING DESIGN W OOD C ONSTRUCTION D ESIGN COMPONENTS R ESTORATION HISTORIC BUILDINGS COMPONENTS Research groups Building restoration, construction techniques and architecture of wooden structures are the main interests of the Building Design group. Attention is paid to the role of innovative construction techniques in traditional structures like wooden buildings, and the assessment of and the research on new methodologies for the improvement of house comfort (domotic).
9
ENVIRONMENT AND LAND-USE ANALYSIS FOREST ECOLOGY AND ECOLOGICAL PLANNING GEODESY AND SURVEY URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Research groups most advanced techniques The three groups have a shared interest in the development of new criteria for environmental protection and land planning, with particular reference to mountain areas. They use the most advanced techniques to read and represent the land and the environment, and they focus on issues like sustainable development. Activities range from study of the collection and elaboration of geographic data to the interpretation of population dynamics and the assessment of the impact on the environment of human activities and settlements.
10
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND MANAGEMENT Research groups The research areas of Hydraulics, Hydraulic Constructions and Hydrology, and Sanitary Engineering were the founding sectors of DICA. Professors and researchers, together with doctoral students, form a well-consolidated group. The Applied Mathematics, Engineering Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, and Transformation Processes Engineering groups play an important role which traverses all the above- mentioned sectors. HYDRAULICS HYDRAULIC CONSTRUCTIONS & HYDROLOGY SANITARY ENGINEERING ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS APPLIED MATHEMATICS ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS & HEAT TRANSFER TRANSFORMATION PROCESSES ENGINEERING
11
HYDRAULICS Theoretical and applied research on issues typical of hydraulics in mountain areas, such as fluvial dynamics, river morphology and pollution sediment transport and erosion processes Environmental protection and management landslides and debris flows snow avalanches FreeFoto.com
12
HYDRAULIC CONSTRUCTION AND HYDROLOGY Studies the mechanisms that control the flow of water in the terrestrial component of the hydrological cycle. The outputs from its research have important applicative uses in the management and protection of water resources and flood prevention. Environmental protection and management Small lakes monitoring Dams Surface hydrology
13
SANITARY ENGINEERING Carries out research on the quality of water (drinking and natural) wastewater treatment (by means of advanced technologies i.e. bio-membrane, etc.) the treatment of urban solid waste (plants, laboratory experiments, …) Environmental protection and management Lab experiments on urban waste Purification plant
14
ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS Studies the atmospheric dynamics focusing on phenomena occurring in mountain areas > < and valleys and on physical processes in the atmospheric boundary layer. < It also studies the historical series of meteorological variables in order to identify climate dynamics. Environmental protection and management
15
APPLIED MATHEMATICS Studies the mathematical modelling and numerical methods simulation of engineering problems and scientific phenomena (shock waves, shallow water) Environmental protection and management Malpasset dam
16
ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS & HEAT TRANSFER Studies the rational use of energy heat and mass transfer in porous media environmental thermo- fluid-dynamics Environmental protection and management TRANSFORMATION PROCESSES ENGINEERING Studies the energy conversion (bio-mass and hydrogen) and food engineering (extraction of compounds interesting for the food and pharmaceutical industry starting from agricultural-forestal materials).
