8 THE BEGINNING AND CULMINATION OF THE CHURCH

9 God created man to make him share in his own blessed life

10 CCC 1 1 God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church.

11 The desire for God is written in the human heart

12 CCC 27 27 The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for...

13 St. Augustine – Confession “You have made us for yourself and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

14 In his search for God, man stands in need of being enlightened by God’s Revelation

15 CCC 38 38... man stands in need of being enlightened by God's revelation, not only about those things that exceed his understanding, but also "about those religious and moral truths which of themselves are not beyond the grasp of human reason, so that even in the present condition of the human race, they can be known by all men with ease, with firm certainty and with no admixture of error."

16 God has fully revealed himself to man

17 CCC 50 50... Through an utterly free decision, God has revealed himself and given himself to man. This he does by revealing the mystery, his plan of loving goodness, formed from all eternity in Christ, for the benefit of all men. God has fully revealed this plan by sending us his beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

18 Hebrew 1:1-2 1 In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; 2 in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. 19 19 John 14:7-10 7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.

20 Therefore there will be no further revelation

21 CCC 66 66... no new public revelation is to be expected before the glorious manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ." Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been made completely explicit; it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance over the course of the centuries.

22 CCC 68 68 By love, God has revealed himself and given himself to man. He has thus provided the definitive, superabundant answer to the questions that man asks himself about the meaning and purpose of his life.

23 Our response to God’s Revelation is faith – “I believe”

24 CCC 143 143 By faith, man completely submits his intellect and his will to God. With his whole being man gives his assent to God the revealer.

25 Before Christ ascended into heaven, he founded his Church to continue to be with us (“extension of the incarnation”)

26 THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH

27 The word “Church” is derived from the Greek word “Ekklesia” which means : “gathering” or “assembly”

28 The gathering of God’s people (i.e. gathering back into the family of God) began right after the “Fall”

29 Genesis 3:15 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.” Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. National Conference of Catholic Bishops, & United States Catholic Conference. Administrative Board. (1996, c1986). The New American Bible : Translated from the original languages with critical use of all the ancient sources and the revised New Testament (Ge 3:15). Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.

30 CCC 761 761 The gathering together of the People of God began at the moment when sin destroyed the communion of men with God, and that of men among themselves. The gathering together of the Church is, as it were, God's reaction to the chaos provoked by sin…

31 CCC 762 762 The remote preparation for this gathering together of the People of God begins when he calls Abraham and promises that he will become the father of a great people. Its immediate preparation begins with Israel's election as the People of God.

32 CCC 541 541... "To carry out the will of the Father Christ inaugurated the kingdom of heaven on earth." Now the Father's will is "to raise up men to share in his own divine life." He does this by gathering men around his Son Jesus Christ. This gathering is the Church, "on earth the seed and beginning of that kingdom."

33 THE CULMINATION OF THE CHURCH

34 Christ chose 12 men, taught them, sanctified them, ordained them and gave them authority. Then He chose Peter to be the Chief Shepherd (primacy of Peter).

35 John 21:15-17 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” (Jesus) said to him, “Feed my sheep. 36 36 Luke 22:31-32 31 “Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers.” Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. 37 37 Matthew 16: 18-19 18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. National Conference of Catholic Bishops, & United States Catholic Conference. Administrative Board. (1996, c1986). The New American Bible : Translated from the original languages with critical use of all the ancient sources and the revised New Testament (Mt 16:18). Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.

38 Genesis 3:4-5 4 But the serpent said to the woman: “You certainly will not die! 5 No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad.” Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. National Conference of Catholic Bishops, & United States Catholic Conference. Administrative Board. (1996, c1986). The New American Bible : Translated from the original languages with critical use of all the ancient sources and the revised New Testament (Ge 3:4). Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.

39 THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH TO GOVERN THE HOUSE OF GOD

40 CCC 553 553... The "power of the keys" designates authority to govern the house of God, which is the Church. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, confirmed this mandate after his Resurrection: "Feed my sheep." The power to "bind and loose" connotes the authority to absolve sins, to pronounce doctrinal judgments, and to make disciplinary decisions in the Church. Jesus entrusted this authority to the Church through the ministry of the apostles and in particular through the ministry of Peter, the only one to whom he specifically entrusted the keys of the kingdom.

41 Isaiah 22:22 22 I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open. Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. The New American Bible : Translated from the original languages with critical use of all the ancient sources and the revised New Testament (Is 22:22). Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.

42 Luke 10:16 16 Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. National Conference of Catholic Bishops, & United States Catholic Conference. Administrative Board. (1996, c1986). The New American Bible : Translated from the original languages with critical use of all the ancient sources and the revised New Testament (Lk 10:16). Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.

43 “A revelation is not given if there is no authority to decide what it is that is given”

44 The “Pillar and Bulwark of Truth” The Church …

45 1 Timothy 3:15 15 But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth. Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. National Conference of Catholic Bishops, & United States Catholic Conference. Administrative Board. (1996, c1986). The New American Bible : Translated from the original languages with critical use of all the ancient sources and the revised New Testament (1 Ti 3:15). Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.

46 Salvation is found in the Truth

47 CCC 851 851... Indeed, God "desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth"; that is, God wills the salvation of everyone through the knowledge of the truth. Salvation is found in the truth. Those who obey the prompting of the Spirit of truth are already on the way of salvation. But the Church, to whom this truth has been entrusted, must go out to meet their desire, so as to bring them the truth. Because she believes in God's universal plan of salvation, the Church must be missionary.

48 The Church is visible in that it has an organized governing body with central authority and structured hierarchy of officials (i.e. governmental dimension of the Kingdom of God)

49 The Church has an invisible reality in that it is a divine organism of the “Body of Christ” (spiritual dimension of the Church)
