An introduction to the book of Joshua
5
Question Concerning the Particulars of the Book 1.Who wrote the book? 2.When was this book written? 3.To whom was it written? 4.And what was the purpose of the author in writing this book?
6
Objections From the Other Side Jos. 15:13-14 speaks of Caleb conquering Hebron Jos. 15:15-19 speaks of Othniel’s conquest of Debir Jos. 19:47 speaks of the conquest of Leshem by the tribe of Dan The book does bear Joshua’s name, but that may be because he is the major character in the book, not the author
7
Reasons Why Joshua Wrote this Book He learned of this need from his mentor Moses The author clearly has a good knowledge of military strategy and describes Israel’s conquest of the land graphically, who better to do that than Joshua The first person plural pronoun is used throughout the book
8
Joshua 7:7-8 Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord GOD, why did You ever bring this people over the Jordan, only to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? If only we had been willing to dwell beyond the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what can I say since Israel has turned their back before their enemies?”
9
Joshua 8:5-6 Then I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. And when they come out to meet us as at the first, we will flee before them. 6 "They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, “They are fleeing before us as at the first.” So we will flee before them.
10
Joshua 24:15 If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
11
Joshua 6:25 However, Rahab the harlot and her father's household and all she had, Joshua spared; and she has lived in the midst of Israel to this day, for she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho. Joshua 24:26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
12
The Purpose of the Book There was a two fold historical purpose There also was a spiritual purpose – Godly leadership is essential for true success in God’s plan, by God’s people – God demands our obedience – God is faithful to those who obey Him – God gives victory to those who obey Him – Obedience to God activates His promises A Messianic purpose
13
Godly Leadership God wants His people led by faithful, ethical and effective leaders Joshua was a brilliant military leader and a strong spiritual influence But what made him great was his submission to God When God spoke, Joshua listened and obeyed His radical obedience should serve as a model and a guide to God’s people
14
Godly Leadership The secret to Joshua’s leadership was his commitment to obeying his God He came to recognize that: – The world believed that the end justifies the means – But for God, the means justifies the end – That is that the means of accomplishing is much more important to God that what is accomplished
