Building Blocks for Life: Being Obedient

Defined An obedient person is someone who is submissive to the restraint or command of authority. Simply stated, they are willing to obey.

Memory Verses The importance of obedience is generally emphasized by Jesus, and specifically by Paul, as he addresses the relationship of parents and children (John 14:15; Eph. 6:1-3).

John 14:15, NASB If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

Ephesians 6:1-3, NASB Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.

Positive Examples Abraham Regarding Isaac Ananias Regarding Saul

Abraham Regarding Isaac Abraham obeyed God when instructed to offer his son Isaac as a burnt offering to the Lord (Gen. 22:1-19; James 2:21-24).

Ananias Regarding Saul Ananias was obedient when instructed to present God’s plan and purpose to Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9:10-19; 22:12-16).

Negative Examples Lot's Wife Regarding Sodom Saul Regarding the Amalekites

Lot's Wife Regarding Sodom Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt when she disobeyed the angelic instruction, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you…” (Gen. 19:12-28; Luke 17:28-32).

Saul Regarding the Amalekites Saul was rejected as King when he disobeyed the prophetic command regarding the destruction of Amalek (1 Sam. 15:1-23; Isa. 1:10-20).

Conclusion & Challenge Are our homes pleasing unto God? Are our lives acceptable unto the One who will judge us in the last day? How are we doing as children? Do we obey our parents? Do we honor them as we ought?

Conclusion & Challenge The blessings of obedience are great (Deut. 28:1-14). The penalties of disobedience are terrible (Deut. 28:15-24).
