How can I create a richer description? 1. By using adjectives: adorable, angelic, creepy, and lean. 2. By using similes: I am so thirsty, that my throat is as dry as a bone. Watching the show was like watching grass grow. 3. By using metaphors: He is the apple of my eye.
3
Simile: A simile is a comparison between things that are alike. Similes compare two things by using “like” or “as.” Metaphor: A metaphor is a comparison between things that do not use “like” or “as.”

More Metaphors 1. Light shot through the crack of the door. Light moving through a door is being compared to how a bullet leaves a gun. 2. The veil of fog hung over the city. Fog that hangs on a city is being compared to how a veil hangs on a woman’s head.

Exit Slip 1. What is a metaphor? Use the word “moon” in a metaphor. 2. What is a simile? Use the word “orange” in a simile.

What is a compound adjective? A compound adjective is used when two adjectives are combined using a hyphen to change how you describe a verb. Ex: The five-year-old boy wanted the red balloon. However, if the age comes after the noun (or after a noun and a verb, such as "Rudolph is" below), then it doesn’t need a hyphen because it isn't directly changing the noun. Ex: Rudolph is two years old.
