2 + Ch. 1.2: WORK…WHY? Which of the following reasons are most important to you? I have no choice. I must work I work to pay for my food, shelter & clothing I work to buy the good things in life – things I want but don’t need I work to provide my family with an acceptable lifestyle I work to feel productive, to make use of my skills and talents, and to gain rewards.

3 + Ch. 1.2: WORK…WHY? DRUDGERY – dull and tedious labor What kind of work to you is drudgery? Would a very repetitive job seem that way? Or not? EQUAL PAY – Payment that is equal regardless of age, sex, race or religion Can you think of an example of when you’ve heard someone was not equally paid?

5 + Ch. 1.2: WORK…WHY? SELF CONCEPT – How people view their own skills, interests, and competence level Describe a task that makes you happy Describe a task that makes you frustrated When did completing a task make you feel competent?

8 + Chapter 2: KNOWING YOURSELF There are 4 things that shape you: Environment Surroundings Heredity Physical or mental characteristics from parent to you Culture Way of life in the society where you live Life Experiences Things you have had happen to you

9 + Chapter 2: KNOWING YOURSELF Examples from my life… Environment Grew up with only boys, diverse neighborhood, southside of Chicago, small family Heredity Health problems, short, talk with my hands Culture High school students were expected to go to college Life Experiences Both parents worked, went on vacation, had sister I competed with…

10 + Chapter 2: KNOWING YOURSELF PERSONALITY – Relationship that exists between all of a person’s psychological parts. 4 parts to your Personality: Character – sense of morality & ethical code Temperament – the way you usually act, feel & think in certain situations Ability – how well you perform specific tasks Interests - preferences you have for specific topics or activities (interests & abilities can overlap)

11 + Chapter 2: KNOWING YOURSELF How my personality makes me unique... Character Tend to be a rule follower, helper, loyal, each day is its own Temperament Patient, love being with people, sympathetic Ability Not a procrastinator, listener, communicator, storyteller, organization Interests History, European culture, music, writing, helping others be successful

12 + Chapter 2: KNOWING YOURSELF TRAITS – characteristics that make you similar or different from other people Personality traits – any trait that can be measured Social Self – involvement with other people and your view of what they think about you Self Esteem – judgment about your level of competence (ability) as a person NOT ALWAYS ACCURATE!!!!

13 + CHAPTER 2: KNOWING YOURSELF LEISURE TIME - free time away from your everyday job responsibilities AVOCATION - constructive activity that provides you with personal satisfaction
